On May 26, 1959 Harvey Haddix pitched a "no hitter" and lost. Here is a link to story from the Pitt Post Gazette about the game and Harvey.

Baseball in it's infinite wisdom no longer recognizes the game as a no-hitter since he lost. Personally, I think that makes no sense.

It would be interesting to know if anyone remembers this game or meeting him at any Pirates events throughout the years.

I was 11 years old and honestly don't remember it. I have some vague memory of Haddix and something special happening but no details.

May be because it was that summer that I found myself uncontrolably thinking about those young people with bumps in their shirts. There was a great awakening in me that summer which like a volcano exploded many times. Enough of those thoughts.

My Dad used to tell me about it all the time.

The thing is, back then, there was probably only a couple radio stories about it, probably one TV story (for people that HAD tv), and a couple wire stories.

Today, with all the ESPNs etc, you would hear about it forever!

Note (link below) there was a guy named "Roman Mejias" playing RF. Can't remember exactly what happened but Mejias was thrown out at 3B on some sort of base-running blunder. It's here:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MLN/MLN195905260.shtml

Had a good scoring chance there and blew it. If Mejias had scored Haddix would be remembered as one of many (maybe not that many, but several) pitchers who threw a perfect game. Cost us the game, but it let Haddix pitch twelve perfect innings and he will be remembered for that - but not by the official baseball "purists". He pitched 12 perfect innings, but didn't even get credit for a no-hitter because you have to give up no hits for the entire game to get credit for a no-hitter.

Two oddities.

Clemente didn't play. Mejias played RF. Can't remember why.

Haddix did get one memorable win when Mazeroski hit a HR on Oct. 13, 1960. He deserved a win like that.
