Pirate pitchers Zach Duke and Ross Ohlendorf rank first and second in the NL in fewest pitches per inning among qualified starters. Duke is throwing an average of just 13.9 pitches per inning, and Ohlendorf 14.5.

That permits these starters to go deeper into games. Duke has thrown 57 innings in 8 starts, an average of more than 7 innings per start. Ohlendorf has thrown 43 innings in 7 starts, an average of more than 6 per inning even counting being taken out early in his last start against the Cards after pitching really well in the 6th inning.

Meanwhile, Maholm has throwng 51 1/3 innings in 8 starts, an averge of more than 6 per game. In the NL, Duke leads the league in IP per start, while Maholm is 15th and Ohlendorf is 26th.

Nice that the number 3 and 4 starters are pitching really well. If Snell can harness his talent, the starting pitching is going to be quite good this year.
