Romulo Sanchez, that is. Sorry, couldn't resist.

The Pirates traded Romulo Sanchez to the Yankees for minor-league pitcher, Eric Hacker who was just dropped from the Yankees 40 man roster. Details here:

The pitcher the Pirates received in exchange, Eric Hacker, is a 26-year old starter. He lost full seasons in 2004 dut to due to elbow problems and 2006 due to shoulder problems.

When he has been healthy, he has been very successful. He has an extremely low walk rate, and prior to this season (his first in AAA), a remarkably low HR rate. Coming into this season, Hacker had given up just 13 HR's in 398 innings. This season, however, he had already surrendered 3 in 16 innings.

Consider Hacker a candidate for the 5th spot in the rotation. Nobody should expect much from him, but he's certainly more worthwhile to this team than Romulo! is at this point.

The best comparison may be to Ohlendorf, with not quite the same top end velocity. He has consistently exhibited better control and a higher K ratio in the minors than Karstens, so he is an upgrade over Karstens. (Need to be fair to Karstens, however, since he has given the team 3 quality starts. That is about all you can expect from the number 5 starter.)

Pirates now have legitimate starting pitching candidates in the upper minors (Daniel McCutchen, Hacker, and Lincoln).
