If he's that good, I say give him the money. Since he is not able to participate in the draft, the $4 million signing bonus could be cheaper than what he would demand if he were drafted. Furthermore, I think the Bucs must be very serious since they ordered a DNA test on him to determine his true age. The fact that his agent and Gayo are old friends could be a huge factor in this as well.

Hmmm ... that is a lot of money for a kid younger than my son. I guess that is the way the signings are going to progess - the payments become so large that it is like signing a MLB free agent.

The funny thing is that if he were subject to the draft, he'd likely make quite a bit more.

Basically it's a calculated bet that he'll be worth well more than that $4M in the long run. And in my opinion, these are the types of moves that the Pirates have to be making and have long neglected in the past. It's no guarantee that we'll be better in the future, but it's a step in the right direction.
