This isn't really a Pirates or baseball post, but could relate to the Buccos in some way.

The other day, I was thinking about some of Pittsburgh's greatest sports heros and the numbers they wore while playing in this city. For example...Lemieux wore #66 which was retired by the Pens. Everyone knows that when you see the 66, it jogs memories of Lemieux. #21, for me at least and I'm sure countless others, will always be associated with Clemente.

Are there other numbers that you will always associate with a particular player in a particular sport and you feel like that number should be unofficially retired across the city's three pro sports teams?

Son has been number 21 for that reason since age 9:

The numbers that I think merit considerable respect (but not necessarily being retired) are:

#8 - Willie
#59 - Ham
#47 - Blount

I don't think any numbers for Pittsburgh should be retired. The closest i would say is either Willie's #8 or Roberto's #21.

I also wore #21 all my playing career for every sport i played. I played baseball since i was 4-18, soccer from 8-18, and basketball from 8-15. One year when we moved from junior varsity to varsity for soccer they tried to make me wear the #59 and i ripped if off the jersey and went and bought a number kit and made my #21 again. They never realized and i was able to keep it. I would never play a sport without being #21.

Number 21 rocks. But hey, 59 is not a bad number, either.

And you are correct about the "number kit." Basically any uniform, except those with embroidered numbers, can have the number changed pretty inexpensively.

I would add

58-- Lambert
75-- Mean Joe
9-- Maz

Bucfan, you sure he isn't at least part left handed? He sure wears his hat like one.

Being that I am only just now approaching 30 years old, I might not be the person to answer this, but in my estimation, there have only been 2 players who have transcended the entire city's culture: Mario and Roberto. MAYBE Maz, for his heroic homer. But while guys like Stargell and certain Steelers mentioned in this thread were immensely popular among fans- hard core and fair weather- were they really in the same category as Mario and Roberto?

The subject of conversation too many times to merit a repeat, Az.

Most recently, son was given flip-down sunglasses commonly worn by outfielders. He desperately wants to wear them while pitching, and is dissuaded only by the fact that his coach is very much "old school" and would not take kindly to such sartorial decision.

LOL. Flipdowns for a pitcher. That's a new one by me.

Willie and Roberto's numbers should be retired, without question.

I'd like to throw in some possible future considerations pending career numbers...

#86 and #87
