Back in early May when this thread opened, I said I'd choose as my prospects to follow the two Indian pitchers and South African shortstop Gift Ngoepe. All three were expected to be assigned to the GCL Pirates.

Well, the Gulf Coast League rosters have been posted, and while Ngoepe is listed as an infielder there, Rinku Singh and Dinesh Kumar Patel are not to be found. Don't know what, exactly, this indicates. Maybe the two Indians are not yet deemed game-ready.

Has anyone else seen anything on them lately?

Hughes is hurt. Has not pitched since May 16.

I'm taking Gorkys Hernandez.
He's been ice cold since we've gotten him. Hitting only .114 with only 4 hits. But now that he is "my guy" he's going to bust out of the slump in a major way. Mark it down.

That is gutsy.

0-1 as a PH in today's game. Average down to .111.

With his first pick in the first round of the "adopt a Pirates minor leaguer," Bucfan selects ...

Jared Hughes, right-handed starting pitcher, Altoona.

23 years old, formerly of Long Beach State. He is off to a slow start, with an 0-4 record, but is sporting an ERA of 2.79. He pitched 6 no-hit innings in his first start of the year. He is a ground-ball guy with good control. He could make AAA this year, if he pounds the strike zone and avoids big-pitch innings.

And look at this guy - how can I not root for him?

I'm rooting for him to get a haircut.

Ok, I've got a little something to keep me sane. I am adopting Chase D'Arnaud as "my guy" to follow through the Pirates system. Nobody else can have "my guy" (that sounds weird...head out of the gutter fellas!) but you choose your own. Put his name in the Subject line and keep us updated.

Try not to pick McCutchen, Alvarez, or Tabata. Make it a young kid in the low minors so we can follow him.

Ok, so Chase D'Arnaud is a SS from Pepperdine University and was selected in the 4th round of the 2008 draft. He is currently playing for West Virginia, the Pirates A affiliate. He is hitting .301 with 2 HRs, 15 RBI, and 4 SB.

I'll take Michael Dubee if nobody else has yet.

He's a 23 year old righty reliever at Lynchburg. So far this year in 34.1 innings he's allowed 30 hits and struck out 48 batters with a grand total of three (that's right, THREE!!!) walks and posted an ERA of 1.31.

All right, he's a bit old for his level, he's with his third organization (Phillies traded him for Tad Iguchi, and the Bucs got him from the White Sox for Andy Phillips), and he's never shown any sign that he could pitch like this before, but those numbers are positively Cappsian. Besides, strikeouts are sexy, and if I'm going to be forced to choose a guy, I'm at least going to choose one who is sexy.

:P

As part of the "Adopt a Pirates Minor Leaguer" charity program, I will pick Jarek Cunningham, 19-year-old SS/3B who most recently played for the GCL Pirates and hit .318/.385/.507 in 162 plate appearances last year. Unfortunately he's on the DL due to a knee injury has has yet to play this season. I'm hoping for a successful return to the field.

Fortunately, this won't cost me 60 cents a day and I won't have to write him any letters.

Okay. Gorkys' been hitting better. He had 2 hits tonight with 2 runs and an rbi. He now has his average up to .146 (did I just type "up to .146"?)
Now that he's my adopted minor league player who knows how high he will fly....

With this adopting a minor leaguer thing...would that make Cecil Fielder the baseball equivalent of Sally Struthers?

Anyway, my guy Calvin Anderson (1st baseman for West Virginia) is hitting .282 has 13 2B's, 2 3B's, 7 HR's, 37 RBI, .333 on base %, .477 slugging %, 61 K's, 12 BB's, and 1 Stolen Base

My foster pitcher, the east valley's own Rudy Owens, throws 8 shutout innings allowing only 1 hit, with 9 k's and no walks. Overall his era is in the low 2's. Nice prospect.

Nice. Very good work by Owens. He has been one of the best pitchers in the low minors for the Pirates. In his last two starts, he has gone 15 innings, giving up just 5 hits, NO WALKS, 17 K's, and 0 runs allowed. For the year, batters are hitting a meager .198 off him.

I don't know. We might need a master list for these guys.

P.S. Curve - what is Jared Hughes' status? I know he is on the DL and has not pitched for a month. I cannot find anything about the nature of his injury ... please tell me it is not the dreaded elbow problem.
