I'm planning to follow the two Indian pitchers, Singh and Patel, and the South African shortstop, Mpho Gift Ngoepe. The guess here would be that all three will be assigned to the Gulf Coast League Pirates (where they may well be exposed pretty quickly). So far, however, I haven't found an '09 schedule for the league. Last year, the GCL began play on June 19, so this season may still be more than a month from opening.

My guy, Jared Hughes, went 5 innings on May 11, giving up just 3 hits, 0 runs, while fanning 4. He won for the first time this season. So, my guy is 1-0 with an ERA of 0.00 since he became "my guy."

Rudy Owens went 5 and a third, 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 1 BB, 3 K, 2 HBP. I am curious what their pitch counts ar elimited to.

Good question. Bucco minor-leaguers are not throwing nearly as many innings the past two years as they did in years past, I know that. It used to be that if a pitcher was getting guys out in the 6th or 7th inning, he stayed in the game, even at 100+ pitches.

No longer the case, as Hughes and Owens prove.

Are you trying to invoke Smokey Robinson's "My Guy"?

That might have the wrong connotation, but - talking 'bout my guy, my guy.

We had a nice talk about Brian Friday in the A. McCutchen red hot thread. I like him alot, and i hope this will mean the end of Brian Bixler next year in Triple-A. We will soon be replacing the xl in Bixler with a tch.

I like Hague, too. He looked very good in the games I saw in Eastlake last year (Hickory at Lake County.)

Calvin Anderson intrigues me. The 6'7" first baseman is hitting .305 with five dingers for West Virginia.

Greg Picart is a slick fielding shortstop who is starting to hit in low A-ball. I saw him make a spectacular diving grab and flip on a double play for Hickory.

Dominican righty Ramon Aguero throws in the mid nineties but has control issues. I will check out these guys as well as D'Arnaud and Grossman when the Power comes here to northeast Ohio next weekend.

Hughes throws in game one of the doubleheader against Akron (weather permitting).. sorry I haven't posted in awhile but its been a really busy year to this point.

Not much to say about the teams start. They aren't fielding well and the hitting has been spotty at best..but its a long season so hopefully things turn around..

Weather must have interrupted Hughes tonight. He certainly was not removed due to his performance.

Hughes went 4 innings, gave up 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks and 5 K's. In his past two starts (since he became "my player"), Hughes has made two starts, gone 9 innings, giving up just 6 hits, 1 walk, 9 K's and 1 run. For the season, Hughes has thrown 28 1/3 innings, giving up 26 hits, 10 walks, 19 K's with an ERA of 1.91.

That, my friends, is pitching.

Calvin Anderson is hitting .305, 5 HR's, 8 2B's, 1 3B, 23 RBI's, .362 OBP, .543 Slugging...6 walks, 32 K's

Uhh-ohh. Just read that Jared Hughes left the game with elbow soreness.

Damn it. I pick a guy, he is throwing really well, and develops elbow problems.

Chase is definitely slumping although I do not think anyone expected him to hit .370 his first full year of professional baseball.

But you know who isn't slumping recently? Steve Pearce.

It is fantastic to see Pearce and McCutchen doing well. Let's hope they can really keep this up.

Neil "The Forgotten Man" Walker has quietly turned it up a notch lately as well. So quietly, in fact, that even DK has forgotten him. In yesterday's minor league report, DK mentioned Sean Smith (4 scoreless innings), Chris Bootcheck (save), Pearce (2 for 2 with 2 walks) and McCutcheon (1 for 5) but somehow failed to note that it was Walker's 3-run pinch-hit double in the bottom of the eighth that turned the tide and won the game.

Walker is batting .382 in his last 10 games with 3 doubles, a triple, 2 homers and 7 RBI. Not too shabby.
