Ok, I've got a little something to keep me sane. I am adopting Chase D'Arnaud as "my guy" to follow through the Pirates system. Nobody else can have "my guy" (that sounds weird...head out of the gutter fellas!) but you choose your own. Put his name in the Subject line and keep us updated.

Try not to pick McCutchen, Alvarez, or Tabata. Make it a young kid in the low minors so we can follow him.

Ok, so Chase D'Arnaud is a SS from Pepperdine University and was selected in the 4th round of the 2008 draft. He is currently playing for West Virginia, the Pirates A affiliate. He is hitting .301 with 2 HRs, 15 RBI, and 4 SB.

Owens pitched 6 innings last night, allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 0 BB, 6 K. Pretyy good line considering that the pitchers are on strict pitch counts.

With his first pick in the first round of the "adopt a Pirates minor leaguer," Bucfan selects ...

Jared Hughes, right-handed starting pitcher, Altoona.

23 years old, formerly of Long Beach State. He is off to a slow start, with an 0-4 record, but is sporting an ERA of 2.79. He pitched 6 no-hit innings in his first start of the year. He is a ground-ball guy with good control. He could make AAA this year, if he pounds the strike zone and avoids big-pitch innings.

And look at this guy - how can I not root for him?

Hey this is a good idea, maybe it should be put up for a sticky(or whatever its called), I am going to do a little research and find myself a "player to report on." It would be great fo many to get involved.

And with my pick I'm selecting Calvin Anderson the Big 1st Baseman playing for West Virginia...

The 12th round pick from the 2008 draft...

Son of former Steeler Fred Anderson

I've been a Matt Hague fan since last year. I think the Pirates like him, too as they have moved him to 1b so that he has a clearer path the bigs than at 3b.

Hague is having some problems with strikeouts this season ... hope he corrects that issue.

He might have caught it from Alvarez... 0 for 4, 4 K's in yesterday's game

I like Chase D'Arnaud too, but think you need to put his season into the proper context. He's currently in low A and it is many people's belief college players should begin in High A. But since the Pirates have Jordy Mercer in Lychburg, D'Arnaud started in West Virginia.

And to further put D'Arnaud's season into perspective, the San Francisco Giants recently promoted Brandon Crawford from their High A team to AA. Crawford was a 4th round selection last year from UCLA. Same age, same position, drafted in the same round, but currently playing two levels ahead of D'Arnaud.

Jordy Mercer was another I liked when I saw his pickup. Mostly what I liked was that NH picked a bunch of SS's from all age and experience groups. That tells me they think athletacism is important. You can move a SS around to other positions much easier than a lumbering 1b or 3b, and realize more value from them.

Shoot, I wanted Tabata to be my guy, but I'm only 53 years old.
