When Bixler was called up I predicted that we would see a much-improved version. Unfortunately I was wrong.

At the plate he has struck out an amazing 10 times in 15 at bats. He seems totally unable to discern between pitches that are headed down the middle from those in the dirt off the outside corner.

In the field he looks improved but still shaky.

Thank God Wilson will be back soon. I would play Vazquez most of the games in the interrim.

Maybe Bixler can eventually figure something out, but I have my doubts.

I was actually going to start a thread similar to this but I'll jump in here. I think the key to the Pirates lineup this season (and possibly past seasons) is Jack Wilson. With him at the bottom of the order it makes the order more complete. Without him the bottom of the order consists of two guaranteed outs. I think missing Wilson is worse than missing either McLouth and/or Doumit. It feels weird typing that but the Pirates didn't struggle to score runs until Wilson was lost.

Bixler is flying up the list of my all-time least favorite Buccos.

Interviewed yesterday, Russell said that Bixler has gone back to one or two back habits he had last year, and that the pitchers are picking on him until he gets back to doing what he did in ST. JR was pleased with the overall defensive effort. JR felt that Bixler, along with just about everyone else, was trying to do too much to compensate for Doumit and Wilson, and that was leading to the regression in habits.

In other words, when he relaxes and does that Long taught him, he'll be alright.

....yes, and he should start relaxing in about a week or so, because he will be back in Indianapolis.

Bixler has proven he will never be a true major leaguer and he will be lucky if he sticks with our Triple-A team after the season.

Bixler's approach at the plate is to swing at a random location hoping that the ball will be there. It is amazing how many times the ball is, in fact, in a completely different location.
