From Today's PPG Blog:

INDIANAPOLIS (7-9) won at Columbus, 5-4. LHP Tom Gorzelanny (1-0, 4.91) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four, walked four, hit a batter and threw 53 of 94 pitches for strikes. RF Garrett Jones (.306) went 1 for 2 with a double and two walks. 1B Steve Pearce (.246) went 1 for 4 with two RBIs. CF Andrew McCutchen (.301) went 1 for 4. (Emphasis Added)

It makes you wonder what happened to him after 2007. I blamed Tracy for his decline in performance in 2008, but I have a hard time believing that his continued inability to throw strikes consistently is due to injury concerns.

Probably mechanical and mental. It's almost a Catch 22 situation but mechanics have to be a big part of the probelm.

This assumes he threw strikes before Tracy.

He didn't. His biggest problem always has been throwing strikes. Not as badly as now, but still poorly in his career.

I think he got by with nasty stuff off the edge in his first year here, and maybe Tracy had a hand in reducing the "nastiness" of his stuff to eminantly "layoffable". But, he is starting to remind me of *gasp* Fat Jimmy in that he needs guys to chase his stuff out of the zone to win.

In that trying to fix him mechanically would mess with his mental state, but trying to boost his confidence would lead him to think his mechanics are just fine?

It's totally the catcher's fault. If only they had Ronny Paulino at Indy....

I am not speaking for Az, but I believe that you have summed it up pretty well. When athletes who have succeeded in the past are asked to change how they perform, they almost always encounter difficulty. Doubt creeps in. The player wants to go back to the "old way."

It is a challenging process. Very bright, insightful players can better implement the instruction, but every player will see at least a short-term decline in performance as the changes are put into play.

Hmmmm, although I consider myself to be fairly bright, this analysis sounds very similar to my golf game. Given that I have only a limited number of rounds per summer, I'm not willing to go to the range after re-doing my swing and to have a summer or two of $hitty scores.

I don't think Gorzo will ever be a good starter again in the majors. If he makes it to the majors he will be a bad starter or an okay reliever. So it think it is time to get him to work on throwing stirkes just for an inning or two.
