AlexandriaDukes' question inspired this poll.

I will vote a bit later ... bad form to set up a poll and then be the first to vote in the poll.

I voted for Adam LaRoche. After lamenting his early season failures in post after post I am thrilled to see him hitting the ball, and with authority, to start the season. It is making a big difference, especially for a team short on offense. Hope he puts together a full season like this. That obviously would be a win/win. He is clearly helping the team win games, and if they still consider him a trade piece later on this can only help his value.

All of the above and then some. Really, everything about this team has surprised me, of course not including the nice starts by McLouth and Doumit which I anticipated. Those were just icing on the cake. The starting pitching, bullpen, Nyjer Morgan, the bat of Sanchez thus far, Adam's start, Andy's rebound. Really the only person on the roster I haven't been satisfied with is Moss, but I predict that to change. I know, I'm drinking the kool-aid. But it's hard not to right now.

A few votes have been cast ... I voted for Jaramillo. Why?

Because his productivity is something that the Pirates really had no right to expect. Nyjer Morgan had major league experience. Adam Laroche is an accomplished hitter, who is a 25-30 HR guy. The surprise aspect for them is not as much as it is for Jaramillo.

Jaramillo is money on defense behind the plate. Real quiet when receiving the pitches, very good at blocking the ball, and with a gun. Additionally, he is really hitting so far - so much so that he has lessened the loss of one of the Pirates' best players, Doumit, more than I would have reasonably expected.

Jaramillo is hitting .364/.440/.545 so far. He has 3 BB's and 4 K's in 25 plate appearances. And his base hits are not "cheapies." He is simply ripping line drives. And oh yeah, he is also a switch-hitter.

"Its early." Yes, I realize that and do not assume that he is going to continue hitting like this, but it is really nice to have a back-up catcher who can take over when the starter - a key part of the offense - is injured, and contribute big time.

You hear that, Keith Osik?

I voted Jaramillo also, but it is really close in the voting. There are alot of guys tied with 3. Its a hard decision to make.
Great poll and great timing for it!

Thank you. As I noted, AlexandriaDukes deserves some credit for posing the question on which the poll is based. I hoped to put the best candidates on the list, and see if the vote is close. If it is a blow-out, the answer is not really disputed and the poll was not necessary.

Pleased that is not the case here.

I voted for Morgan mainly because I didn't think he could get on base enough to be a real offensive threat. But, all of the players on the poll have been pleasant surprises. Let's hope that this Bucco team is finally, as individuals, playing up to their potential and beyond. There IS talent on this team. It's nice to finally see it.

I, too, voted for Morgan. I've been on the anti-Nyjmo bandwagon since the McLouth-Morgan position battle in late '07 and I still have serious reservations about his long-term viability, but as long as he keeps playing more like Tim Raines and less like Gary Pettis, I'm happy to be wrong about him.

Career April: 198/292/373
April 2009: 288/373/621

The slg% alone wins this contest in my mind. JJ's only played in 7 games. That really influences my vote. Duke is my runner up.

it was a coin toss thus far between adambomb & the duke...

but choose adam, due to the big difference in production from last 2 years and now..
but like said before, everybody is a pleasant surprise in that list, else we would not be 11-7

lets get 2 out of 3 vs the brewcrew and i am even more convinced

Nyger hasn't been much of a surprise to me. He is doing what he did last year, and what he's done his whole career as he's moved up a level.

The relief pitching... for sure. Especially Chavez. I liked his three digit arm, but didn't see this coming out of ST.

But, given the choices, I didn't see Duke being SO dominant.

I meant to include Chavez among the choices. My bad.

I think Freddy Sanchez should have made the list. Who honestly expected him to return to his 2006 form? I didn't.

I debated Freddy, but his career average is .306. He is hitting like he has in the past when he has been productive - 2006, second half 2007, second half 2008. His track record made his productivity less of a "suprise" in my view.

But it was close. I did mean to include Chavez, who is performing very well and way above expection, and thought about Sanchez. That would have been a lot of choices.
