Nice piece in this morning's PPG on the club's new Dominican Republic digs, opening today in Guerra, DR.

It will be extremely gratifying when this venture starts paying dividends for the parent club.

The Pirates also increased their budget for acquiring amateur talent in Latin America -- players outside the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico are essentially free agents beginning at age 16 -- from $700,000 in 2007 to $2 million last year, in the upper third of Major League Baseball, and that could rise again this year.

That is good news.

I agree this is good. I think it's important to take non-traditional paths (as well as traditional) to find talent if you are a small mkt team like us. I actually like the fact that we took the two people from India and the kid from South Africa as long as we do this in addition to signing top draft picks. I know it's a long shot but it costs us nothing.

I also seem to remember Chuck Noll taking some draft pick risks in the 70's and I think that worked out OK. :)

Carlton had a nasty drug problem...
He's doing MMA now and is pretty successful because of his wrestling background...He is and will be the only 6 time National Champion in Wrestling...He has a gym he teaches wrestling at in Johnstown and is helping coach the Johnstown Elementary wrestling program that his son is a member of...Carlton has turned himself around...When I was coaching wrestling before, and now being a spectator of my brothers I get to see Carlton alot...

Sadly was too much success at once for the guy, he felt he was invincible...

Interesting observation and it mirrors one I heard yesterday flipping through the draft between innings. ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer on drafting guys who have had drug or alcohol problems in college... "You have to remember, when you give a guy that kind of money, you will only get more, a lot more, of what he already is".
