Quote:
Schuster’s streak began April 3. He’s piled up 60 strikeouts in the four games, helping Mitchell to a 19-3 record. He’s 7-0 on the season.

He said he was trying not to think about the streak, but late in the game he asked his outfielders to take a few steps because he didn’t want to give up a bloop hit.

Mitchell coach Scot Wilcox called the performance “vintage Schuster.”

“I’ll tell you what, he’s got command of every single pitch,” Wilcox said. “His curve ball, his slider, his change-up, he was just spotting it nicely. He was keeping their hitters off balance.”

Since he is a local boy down here, the local news has harped on the fact that the last prep pitcher to do this was none other than the Rays' Scott Kazmir. Pretty impressive. Draft him.

I would draft him too...but I'm worried about the curves and sliders he's thrown and how long has he thrown them...

He must have great control and some great offspeed stuff cause 90 is hittable. Wonder what the competition is like?

Good question. Son's team played in tournament in San Louis Obispo over Easter, and faced pitcher going to UCLA on a baseball scholarship. Guy was measured via radar gun at 93 mph.

Son's team had 6 hits and 3 runs off him ... still lost, unfortunately.

Team also faced the number 1 prep pitching prospect, Tyler Skaggs. He was throwing 90-91, with a tough curve. Had 5 hits and 2 runs off him.

Had some spare time, so I did a bit of checking.

Schuster pitches for a high school that's in second place in its league, one game back of the leader, with a 22-3 record. His no-nos have come against teams both in and outside that league, with records of 17-7, 10-11, 11-12, and 16-7 (dating back from the most recent).

Give or take a few, New Port Richey is about a 45-minute drive north of St. Pete. It's an area that produced one of last year's state champs in baseball, Dunedin High, although Schuster's school and Dunedin haven't played each other this season.

FWIW, his next scheduled start is on Tuesday, the 28th.

Since the area isn't too far from Prince of Pittsburgh, maybe he can supply more information.

The kid is going for his 5th no-no today and I think ESPN is covering the game somehow...

Nice long piece on him in today's New York Times, too.

Here's the URL if anyone is interested in reading it:

Interesting story. Based on a conversation I had with one scout in So Cal, some teams are concerned about selecting the kid very high because he throws below 3/4, and does not feature a change or two-seam. They wonder how he will retire righties.

For what it's worth.

Great story for this young kid...

Disappointing that he ended up losing the streak in his last high school game as his team lost 9-4 after struggling through 5 innings
