Not a bad nominee. Still pretty much the same staff Colburn worked with and getting way more out of them.

Let's not forget about Don Long and Perry Hill. They deserve honorable mentions, along with, possibly Tony Beasley.

People laughed during the off-season when the coaching staff was mentioned as being important, but all of these guys - and maybe Kerrigan most of all - are making a huge difference in the team.

I'm sure that the coaches deserve props for their work. But they don't play the game, they simply facilitate the playing. My vote would go to the Starting Pitching.

It is far too early to be making such proclamations. I reserve judgment on our coaching staff until at least the All-Star break.

Reserving judgment is fine, and obviously called for when the Pirates have on occasion started out well, only to fade.

But by the same token, it is great that the pitchers are seeing results from Kerrigan's tutelage. They are in fact pounding the inside corner, working ahead, and seeing success.

If they were struggling, then their normal reaction would be to wonder about Kerrigan's philosophy. That is why the early success has a lot of value - the pitchers will continue to pound the inside corner, even when they have a tough start or two.

Without a doubt Joe Kerrigan. Easily.

Kerrigan certainly has preached good pitching.

But, so did Colburn and Spin Williams. Each tried to get Pirates pitchers to pitch inside, with no real degree of success.

The biggest differance?

The pitchers are 26, 27 or thereabouts now. They are simply getting more mature and are willing to actually listen and implement. They are "getting it".

Seems to me there was a rather long and drawn out argument about the pitching coach this off season.

I'm too tired to look for the thread now, but it would be fasinating to revisit that thread now.
