lack of strikeouts this season, but I will take it the walks are down, Maholm hit 2 batters tonight and walked the pitcher, but he kept his composure. Paul if he pitches this way consistently I will put him up against any other pitcher the National League.

Any pitcher who does not fan many batters - i.e., all Pirate starters other than maybe Snell - will succeed only if they (1) do not walk batters, (2) get primarily ground balls, and (3) avoid giving up HR's.

If the pitcher fails in one of those requirements, he will struggle a bit. If he fails in two, he is done by the 4th inning - see Jeff Karstens as Exhibit "A."

Maholm really didn't pitch well tonight except for being able to get out of the trouble he caused. Not near enough strikes. He needs to locate, throw strikes, and tonight didn't.

But he showed his desire by bearing down when in trouble. Amazing-- a shut out when not having your A game. That's a quality pitcher.

No doubt, Maholm was not as sharp as he has been in some games, where he can throw 100 pitches in 9 innings. He walked two batters in the sixth, hit McCann twice, so he dug himself a hole.

But to be fair, he finished 7 innings with 102 pitches. It would have been a lot less, except that Sanchez muffed an easy double play relay.

We get a little spoiled by Maholm. Jurrjens, a good pitcher, threw 120 pitches in 6 2/3 innings.
