Jason Marquis has been a punching bag this year for every team but one - your Pittsburgh Pirates.

He is just not good. C'mon Pirates, lay into this clown.

Have to admire Freddy's heads-up base running this series, from just now sliding early to prevent a DP and ends up advancing McLouth to 2nd to nearly getting back to 1st in the first game, I don't remember the exact play, but if you saw it you know what I'm talking about.

EDIT: And thanks to a LaRoche single that play ends up scoring Nate and cutting the deficit to a run.

Jason Marquis has exactly two quality starts this season.

Guess which team has been the victim of both??

Wow. Soriano swung at pitches out of the strike zone and fanned. What a shock.

Who knew that he was susceptible to going after bad pitches? The Pirates may want to remember this little tidbit.

Be clutch, Freddy.

Hard to pick on Freddy when he's accounted for 50 % of the hits today (okay, now a little less since Michaels had an infield single), but man I wish he hadn't went for that 3-1 pitch.

Not a great pitch to hit, agreed, but he was aggressive in that count and that situation. I would have preferred that he take the walk, move Michaels to second and bring Nate to the plate.

Frustrating game. Very few hard-hit balls against a bad pitcher. Freddy and Laroche in the first, and after that, zero.

What is the deal with winning the game to go .500? I know that the Pirates say they don't care about getting to .500 but it seems like they put out some clunkers with a chance to even their record.

Not a good game at all for the Bucs. Nice games by Sanchez (both offensive and defensively) and LaRoche, no body else even came close, McLouth gets beamed in the knee but walks it off and is okay.

Hopefully this was a fluke outing by Dumatrait. He wasn't giving up hits, just committing WAY too many walks. In fact all 4 Cubs runs came from walks. Err. Even with how bad the offense was today, they still could have walked out of Wrigley winners of the series.

You got that right. They had an opportunity against Atlanta a week ago tomorrow, started JVB in Game 2 of that doubleheader, and lost, 8-1.

Opportunity #2 came two nights later against the Cardinals and the immortal Todd Wellemeyer. Maholm spit the bit, and they lost 5-1.

Opportunity #3 was Friday night vs. the Cubs, and Gorzelanny gives up four dingers. Another L, 7-4.

And today, they could have gotten to 22-22 against Jason Marquis. Result: The offense tanks after the first inning and they lose, 4-3.

Despite the good things that have happened so far this year -- McLouth, Nady, the relief pitching -- the Bucs are almost exactly where they were last year on this date.

C'mon, guys, get over the #$%& hump! Just do it!

I agree, but I think it should also be noted that they have played the majority of the year so far without their Short Stop and at least half that time with one that clearly is not ready for the big leagues and is hitting .177, while the other isn't hitting much better and has only started probably a couple games without committing an error.

I will be impressed if they continue to play .500 baseball until Doumit gets healthy as well.

I was listening on the radio side and Greg Brown and Wehner were wondering if the mound might have been the problem, because both starters were having problems...

This is really Phil's 1st bad start...He pitched a very good every start prior (except after the light problem in Washington)...It just seems if you can get him to shake his focus you can get to him...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the PPG article that mentions what scouts are saying about Dumatrait being a #2 or #3 quality pitcher. He certainly appears to have that kind of stuff, though he obviously needs to control it. He could end up being quite a find.
