Unfortunately, we also know what we will get from Adam Harang.

I expected Doumit to get a day off today, even with the GS yesterday. I am glad though that Russell doesn't feel it necessary for the "Sunday Afternoon Special" lineup. On the other hand, I don't want to see Doumit overworked. We all know about his injury history.

Go Bucs!

Yesterday's game was a day game. If it had been a night game, Doumit has the day off. Also, the Friday rain out means that he played 4, had day off, then will play 2 in a row (both day games). Pretty heavy work load, but it works out that Doumit is not going to be overplayed.

One point - it is tough having your clean-up hitter be the catcher. Great in some respects, since the offense from the position is well above-average, but tough since the clean-up hitter will need to rest for 25 or 30 games. Very few teams face that prospect.

Disappointing top of the first. Morgan doubles and the Pirates cannot move him off that base. Freddy grounds out to SS, Nate takes a pitch that was too close ... he should have hacked at the curve on the inside corner.

Snell is afraid to throw on the inside corner. He missed badly on one to Phillips, and then on the HR was supposed to go inside. The pitch was over the middle of the plate and was crushed. If Snell cannot learn to work the inner half of the plate, he is going to have a loooooong season.

Thank God Snell at least got out of the 3rd. I still have nightmares about being at Bruce's big league debut last year against the Bucs.

Top of the 3rd Morgan was caught stealing, but I like being aggressive on the base paths. Can he steal fifty bases?

I foresee a .300 batting average by Freddy this year.

Aaron Harang is mowing down the Pirates, but he has some of the least impressive stuff I have seen this year. His fastball sits at 83-85 mph, his once dominant curve is not good this game and he rarely throws it. He is relying on a change, which is interesting since it differs in speed from his fastball by only 3 or 4 mph.

Bunch of slow stuff and the Pirates look pretty bad in trying to hit it. McLouth has been called out on strike 3 twice. I don't think he has moved the bat yet, and is 0-2 with 2 K's.

Snell is throwing better as the game goes along. Much better velocity and location. He is spotting the fastball and keeping the breaking ball down. If he could just get out of the first inning ...

He should wait for the pitcher to begin his delivery to the plate ... he took off before Harang started his motion. Harang is so tall and takes a while to get to the plate, so Morgan would have stolen the base easily. He needs to learn not to give up outs by taking off early.

Andy L. crushed one to right-center but it died on the track. Moss lined a single to right and Wilson made the final out by lining out to LF. Some balls were stung that inning. Pirates need to put together some hits ... Harang is not going to walk anybody today. He is not getting to 3 balls on hitters.

Snell walks Aaron Harang, who is 7 feet tall with a huge strike zone. This is why Ian Snell has yet to harness his talent. He spends waaaaay too much time nibbling with relatively bad hitters, then hangs pitches to good hitters.

Gonna once again need late inning heroics to salvage this one ...

Well, Ian got out of the inning but can we score any runs for him? Will Dusty Baker allow Harang to pitch nine innings? Our only chance is to get to their bullpen.

The way he is throwing, Harang is going to go 9 innings in about 100 pitches.

Doesn't seem like it but at this Snell and Harang both have 7 Ks.

Wow ... what a play by Wilson. Reds catcher hit a hard ground ball over the mound with one out, runner on first. Wilson dove, gloved the ball, flipped it from his glove to Sanchez at second for the force, and Sanchez then throws to first to complete the DP. Really, really good play.

Snell's day is done. He escaped a couple of situations, made a terrible pitch to Phillips on the 2-run HR, but battled to keep the Bucs in the game.

Hansen now on the mound. Let's see what he has to offer.

Shaky start but overall not Snell's worst game, he actually starting to putting together a nice string of strikeouts toward the end. This is the first time I think I've seen Hansen pitch.
