I was just watching the Brewers and Giants can and relief pitcher Joe Martinez got hit by a line drive from Mike Cameron right in the temple of the head.
Martinez was conscious the whole time and walked off the field on his own power but there was blood coming out of his nose and he wasn't hit anywhere near the nose so something bad may have happened.
Mike Cameron was shaking and almost in tears because of this. Anybody else see this yet?

Everything sounds positive. Hopefully this isn't something that'll linger for a long time and he's able to make a quick recovery.

It's actually amazing this doesn't happen more often. Very scary.

He'll maybe get calls today from Chris Young or Paul Maholm. Scary...

I forgot that happened to Maholm.

Perhaps we should revisit the question of whether pitchers should wear helmets?

No no no no no no no. I still think it's silly having the 1st and 3rd base coaches wearing helmets.

Why? Is safety less important than fashion?

I don't know about Little League, but I believe all college base coaches are wearing helmets and I know high schools out here are doing it. But pitchers? I don't think so. That said, don't get me started on metal bats.

Not a fashion issue. For pitchers, balance is incredibly important. Pitchers drill on bringing the front leg up while maintaining balance. Falling forward results in the delivery being rushed, falling off to either side makes the pitch go in that direction.

Wearing a helmet will effect balance. Could pitchers adjust and make accomodations for the helmet? I guess, but it would emphasize any delivery where the pitcher was slightly off balance, leading to further problems with control.

The last thing we need to see is Pirate pitchers exhibiting more problems with control.

I think the problem with helmets, at least for me, is that they make it more difficult to lick the window on my short bus.

Ok, I'm done with poor humor for the day (actually, probably not.)

This would open up a whole new market in sports technology. Weighted pitching helmets! I could picture Maholm strapping on one of these before a game........

Image

Then when he gets into trouble, Joe Kerrigan could make a visit to the mound with a toolbox.

Brown: And Maholm walks Pujols on four pitches, looks like Kerrigan is going to make a visit to the mound.

Walk: Maholm looks like he's a little off balance. It looks like Kerrigan is going to with a 5lb back stabilizer with an additional support pole.

Brown: I guess he just needed an alignment then Bob?

Walk: I'd day so. Ever since they switched from wood to aluminum support poles coaches have been scrambling to work out the right adjustments.

Brown: La-La-La-La-LaRoche with a diving stop...........................

Yeah, I'm bored!

Well its not just heads to worry about heads. Remember what happened to Kaz Ishii when he took one to the face.
On September 8, 2002, Ishii was struck in the face by a ball hit by Brian Hunter of the Houston Astros. Ishii underwent emergency surgery for a nasal fracture wherein he had bone chips removed and replaced with a small titanium plate. He did not pitch again that season.

I have to throw this one in.
Kaz Ishii is curently pitching for the Saitama Seibu Lions.
the Saitama Seibu Lions also have a fabulous shortstop named Hiroyuki Nakajima.
Anybody remember that topic?
It was a fire starter!
