Wow. Fantastic start to the season boys. I missed this game, but I sure wish I hadn't. Duke's numbers look strong, did he look it too?

Pirates played well, Duke looked good. As Argentum noted, he busted hitters inside all night long. I suspect that is Kerrigan's influence.

The Pirates need to be better at killing the opposition when they have them in trouble. Buccos left so many on base tonight that I feared it would turn into a nail biter - which it damn near did at the end, when the Cards hitters were raking Yates and then Capps. An idiotic base running move by a Cards player prevented Pujols from coming to the plate in the 9th ...

Great game. I think using that batting dummy is really helping Duke out. He looked very good.
17 hit for the Bucs. That is amazing. Yikes to Yates but i think he will get it back together. He has always been a pitcher recovers well. The Cardinals bullpen and rotation hasn't looked good at all so far this year.
Overall a good night though.

Well if you want to go that far we should be praising the fact that we are tied for 1st place in the NL Central and only a game behind the Marlins for the #1 seed in the playoffs. We like Mary Tyler Moore, We're gonna make it after all!!!
Now after that i'm going to bed

Duke looked very sharp. Right from the outset, I noticed that he looked physically fit, clean cut, and purposeful. He had good velocity and good command all night. He kept the ball down at the knees or even lower when men were on base.

Very encouraging. That's two out of three, not just in games, but in starters who look sharp. Let's hope Ohlendorf can keep it going.

Vazquez had a DP ball hit to him in a key spot early in the game - I believe the first inning. He handled it flawlessly. I'm betting LaRoche would have screwed that up.

Not giving up on Andy just yet, but he has some work to do mentally.

Not to be a downer, but am I mistaken in my observation that Adam is swinging at anything low and inside/outside (again)? He continuously pounds inside breaking balls into the ground by his feet. He just can't lay off of them. Symptomatic of previous years. If I was a betting man, and my wallet thanks me for not being so, I'd say we're in for another bad April. I'd love to be wrong, but his ABs tonight looked like those of April 2007 and 2008.

Pitchers are going to throw him nothing but curves out of the zone until he re-learns to lay off them. He is constantly putting himself behind in counts.

Careful...we're not allowed to criticize Adam LaRoche. ;)

On a positive note, I was very happy to see Moss have a good game. And I'm pleasantly surprised by Nyjer's start. I hope he keeps it rolling.

He got the ball out of his mitt and to the second baseman in a millisecond.

This little blurb from today's Trib is interesting:

Quote:
Early yesterday afternoon, LaRoche took extra fielding practice on the field at Busch Stadium. He spent a half-hour working with Russell, infield instructor Perry Hill and two other coaches.

To figure out what's wrong, Hill spent five innings Tuesday night zeroed in on LaRoche.

"He's a good athlete, and he's got good hands," Hill said. "I wondered why he was late in reacting."

Finally, Hill noticed LaRoche was flipping his glove. LaRoche had the open part of his glove facing him instead of turning it out toward plate. When a ball was hit, LaRoche had to rush to flip over his glove, which cost him a split-second of reaction time.

"When those missiles are hit at you, you don't want any extra movement," LaRoche said. "I guess it's just one of those things you don't think about it and you don't even realize you're doing it until somebody points it out."
