Starting pitching depth
Relievers who can throw strikes
Baserunning fundamentals
Poor Defense (I did not think this team would be this bad on D, but maybe they will improve)
Lack of MI depth

I think they'll be fine on defense...but the pitching is going to kill them if it cant produce

Doumit and Andy Laroche have some defensive limitations. The outfield defense is below average in LF and CF. The only above average positions on defense are SS and 1B. Defense is a concern, particularly for a team like the Pirates that features three groundball starters.

I know the debate has been made on other pages about CF and Nate's defense...I'd rank him as average, maybe slightly above...SS you cant get much better unless your name is Ozzie, Adam is fine at 1st, Freddy can catch anything hit at him, he lacks range...Moss will be fine in RF, if he can master the wall at PNC

Morgan is another question mark for me...Morgan's speed reminds me of The Greatest American Hero, he could take off flying but never mastered landing and always crashed into things...

I will agree that 3B and Catcher are very weak defensively...I sure hope that their bats heat up and stay consistant all season to make up for the bad gloves...

Well said, Nad.

I guess my 5 would be:

1. Starting Pitching
2. Bullpen throwing strikes
3. Lack of Power
4. Speed/Baserunning
5. The Culture of Losing

1. Corner outfield bats
2. Bullpen
3. Lack of power
4. Defense
5. Losing environment

Hellooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! Hopefully, 2009 is different. I think not however.

1. Starting Pitching.
2. Bullpen.
3. Power Hitting.
4. Defense.
5. Hitting with Runners in scoring position.
6. Third Base.
7. Right Field.
8. First Base.
9. Defense at the position of catcher.
10.Ownership.

That just about covers it.

Now, outside of those small little problems, Jury Rand is right!...82-80!

As Ron Cook and Bob Smizik say: "The Worst Ownership in all of Professional Sports...".

I guess you guys never have heard of the Detroit Lions or the Los Angeles Clippers have you?

When they start regularly getting runners in scoring position we can start worrying about that. Until then, how about just:

5. Hitting.

I've heard of both:

And neither one of them have 17 Consecutive Losing Seasons.

I don't think our ownership is worse than the Lions but i do think it is worse than the Clippers.

They're consistantly horrible, they banked on having one good year, not looking for the future and looking for the present...

The Clippers and Lions owners are both worse owners than the Nuttings...

1 - Bullpen
2 - Rotation (not sold on anyone but Maholm)
3 - unproven starts at 3 spots in the lineup is a concern

I surprised not everyone would list lack of power as the biggest weakness on this team. I don't see 100 home runs on this entire club. I would predict the final season homerun total by position:

1B - 25 (5 in 1st half, 20 in second half as usual)
2B - 8
3B - 12
SS - 5
LF - 10 (assuming Morgan and McCutchen in this position, though McCutchen would likely take CF)
CF - 23 (Assuming McClouth plays all season there)
C - 18 (assuming Doumit plays at least 120 games there)
P - 1
PH - 4

That's barely over 100 and that's being optimistic in some positions.

You have no one playing right field, or just no one who is going to hit any homers?

RF should get you 15-20 too...

I think these first 3 games proves the team has potential for power, it is going to come down to the starts going the distance and the bullpen not imploding...

Oops you're right! Moss, Hinske and others could platoon there and contribute another 15. So 100 is certainly doable but it's still a major weakness.

I would have, but I made the mistake at looking at the bullpen.
