In all of your opinions, what are the biggest Pirate weaknesses?? I will list mine, in no particular order.

1) Bullpen
2) Corner OF arms
3) Defense in general
4) Lack of Speed
5) Patience at the plate.

Here are my 5

1) Too much faith in one year wonder starting pitchers.
2) Having players that have had good years have good follow up years.
3) Bullpen
4) Fielding
5) Conditioning

My thoughts about the problems:

  • Pitch selection by hitters (i.e., which pitches to hit and which to take).
  • Starting pitching.
  • Power.
  • Offensive production at 3B.
  • Offensive production at SS.

Here is my list:

3) Rotation
4) Baserunning
5) Hitting

How anyone can put anything other than starting pitching at the top of this list is beyond me.

Totally agreed. All phases of pitching except maybe end game need the most help.

Starting pitching?

Seriously?

I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised by the rotation. I really believe Maholm is going to turn into a top of the rotation guy. I think Duke and Ohlendorf can be solid starting pitchers. I am not 100% sold on Karstens, but I am hoping the can do okay. I really hope Snell can get back to where he was before, but I am still not sure. Then we have a couple options waiting in the wings.

I think by the middle of the year, the rotation will be our strength.

Maholm is very good. #1 on this team but midlle of the rotation on most teams.

Beyond that we have no proven starters. Just some guys we hope can pan out.

Surprised if they do well - exactly. Given Duke's and Snell's considerable problems last year, and the lack of a solid number 5 starter, and the fact that Ohlendorf is an unknown ... the rotation is a concern, particularly given its incredible importance to the success of the team.

Additionally, the pen has some weaknesses, but at least it has three solid and proven contributors: Grabow, Yates and Capps. The rotation cannot make the same claim.

The whole season is going to come down to pitching and how much extra use they put on Grabow, Yates, and Capps...

There is no ace. I love Maholm's toughness, smarts and ability to pitch -- but he's not an ace.

If the Bucs had drafted Lincecum, I'd feel a lot better about this rotation.

The biggest Pirate weaknesses can be summed up in two words:

Bob Nutting.

Maholm is an ace if he pitches like an ace.

Guess what, he has.

I believe in Maholm and Duke should be improved and Ohlendorf has a chance to be ok. Snell needs to find himself and that may be in the words of Chuck Noll "time to go about your life's work."

Maholm is, IMO, a #2 starter. Duke probably makes a decent #5 starter. Ohlendorf, while I think his stuff is fantastic, is a 2-pitch pitcher. He may have some early success, but I think he is destined to be an 8th inning guy. If Snell and Gorzo ever get their heads screwed on right, we could have a decent, if unspectacular, rotation. What we really need is for Lincoln and/or Morris to really develop into a top of the rotation stopper to go along with Maholm.

But as it stands now, yes, SP is probably one of our biggest weaknesses. I would rank it as follows:

1. Bullpen
2. Starting pitching
3. Defense
4. Team Depth, especially MI
5. Baserunning

But other than that, I am sure Mrs. Lincoln enjoyed the play tremendously.
