No, Mike, he is still pretty damn good. 12.3% swinging strike percentage (2nd highest of his career) last year. Last season was his first full year back after the 2015 TJ surgery.

Who were the Cubs bidding with at that price?

Egads!

The Dodgers barely talked with a guy who openly said he wanted to play in LA.

I'll rely on Texas' and LA's evaluations which, heading into UFA, was... meh, no.

LA's concern was the salary penalty because they already owe so much money to Kershaw, Kemp, Turner, Janssen, etc. If the Dodgers were below the penalty cap, they would have pushed to sign Darvish. They weren't, so they didn't.

Conversely, they watched his pitching performances, or lack thereof.

Yeah he sucks. Should be way better than a 1.15 WHIP and 10 Ks per 9 last year.

Did you watch him pitch?

I'm guessing not.

Ok Gus Lobel what did you see that makes you say he is done? What I see are statistical facts that show a proven front of the rotation starter. He had 2 bad WS starts which potentially allowed the Cubs to get a discount.

Two REALLY bad WS starts.

Otherwise, you are correct that Yu has a career worth of solid starts to justify the cost(s). Between the 'pitch tipping' and elbow injury though... wouldn't be shocking if this one hurt the Cubs on the back end of that deal (as most of these types of deals do).

So, the answer is no, I didn't. (Psst, did you watch his second half in Texas leading up to why they were willing to off load him?)

He's done. I'll gladly eat crow if he proves me wrong. Well, not gladly.

I don't think he is done. But by Year 3 of that contract he could be. But here lies the rub. If the Cubs get two or three years from him that are quality, they can eat the rest of the contract. It's a luxury they have.

That is the problem for small market teams.

Could small markets afford 20 million per year? Yes, but only if every year is a quality/productive one.

The entire Darvish to the Cubs is everything thats wrong with baseball. Milwaukee, a very small market team, spent above their comfort zone to catch up to the Cubs. To close the gap if you will. And with one swoop of the check book the Cubs eliminated that.

A blind squirrel trips on a nut every now and then. <---- Thats the goal of small market baseball.

The big six will always be competitive and will always outspend to create an advantage that most teams cant pursue.

The discouraging part for me is that a salary cap that would provide parity is not achievable because the small market teams are the ones that want a cap the least. It comes with a floor and as it is now they are raking in the profits. Losing is the harsh penalty they pay for counting their new money.

I don’t think the Brewers spent as much as you think.

The Cubs signing Darvish does not negate what the Brewers did. And the Brewers still have room in their budget to add pitching, so I assume they will.
