3-3 on first road trip (2 losses to Cardinals)
5-4 on first home stand (2 losses to Marlins; 1 loss to other teams)
4-2 on second road trip (1 loss each to team)

Pirates go into May with a record of 12-9.

Avoid sweeps, be competitive, win series against teams that are at same level.

Same level...hmm....there is a joke in there somewhere.

I don't get the love for the Cardinals I've been hearing. I see Khalil Greene and his .215 average are hitting cleanup. Ludwick can't possibly duplicate last season(of course they are saying that about McClouth and I hope they are wrong). And I don't trust many of their pitchers. I know they have Pujols, but I just don't see them being that good. That's why I'm hoping maybe, just maybe the Pirates can sneak a couple wins there...not holding my breath though.

I think the first road trip is 7 games, so why not go with a 4-3 road trip and a 13-9 start. I'd take that.

You are right. I forgot to add that I thought that one of the Cardinal games would be postponed to later in the year. If not, I'll pick 2-2 against the Cards. But I'll add in another loss and predict a 12-10 month.

Based on the theory that anything that can be done once is repeatable, a 12-10 record in April extends out to a 89-73 record. I'm not saying that is going to happen, I'm just saying that 12-10 doesn't sound like much until you figure it over an entire season.

In any case, I hope your prediction is right....a good start for this team would go a long way.

Brad -
I don't think that 89 wins is a likely scenario. Possible? Won't rule it out. Likely? No way.
But . . . when you factor in very beatable Astros, Brewers, Reds and Padres in the first month, I'd like to see them make the first turn at above .500. Win a series or two at home and split with the Cards . . . its a realistic scenario.
Fingers are crossed,

I absolutely agree, and as I said, I don't expect it either. I'm just saying that it sounds a whole lot more feasible to go 12-10 in any given month than to win 89 games, but the composite results of maintaining a 12-10 pace puts you at 89.

Guys-- I would be satisfied to be 11-11 or even 10-12.

I'd love to see that record. Just playing .500 ball through April and May would be a huge confidence boost for this club.

Agreed. And it would also happen only if the pitching is at least decent. That, my friends, will determine how many games the Pirates win or have a chance to win, since their offense is "ehhh" and will not get much better until 2010.

Just past the half-way point in April . . . losing two of three to the Astros bites. Still think that they could finish above .500 in May by winning one against Florida and winning series against Brewers and Padres. Here's hoping that the Marlins cool off a bit and return to Earth over the next 3 games. That being written, the rotation of Miller, Sanchez and Nolasco isn't exactly unbeatable. Sanchez has been great but Miller and Nolasco are eminently hittable. Maybe we will get to see Monroe break out the thunder stick against Miller tonight.

Just to bring back the April conversation. Did a little better then I thought.
