A Tale of Two Starting Pitchers

One started the day with an ERA of 6.48 and ended it with an ERA of 4.40
The other started with 5.97 and ended with a 6.64 ERA.

And on a related note, the Pirates released Gorzelanny's new shirt logo:

Okay, now I'm sure the Cubs will explode for 10 more runs in the 8th and 9th innings now that I say this, but ...

Had it not been Soriano, it would be a 1-run, 3-2 ball game right now. Not that that is an excuse, however, I think it looks a lot worse than it is. The Cubs only have one more hit than the Pirates. Soriano is one of the hottest players in baseball right now, and Gorzo cannot pitch at Wrigley this year. It's too bad those two had to collide in the first couple of innings today, or it would be a real ballgame right now.

Man, we sure do like to hit home runs at Wrigley once the game is already out of reach. I think I remember Bay and Doumit doing it in the last series as well.

So, assuming it's still 7-4 in the top of the ninth, who do you bat? You've got Bixler, the pitcher's spot and Freddy due up with Bautista, Chavez, Michaels and Rivas, all righties, on the bench. You be the manager. What do you do? I hit Rivas for Bixler and Michaels for the pitcher.

I'd rather have Bautista in there than Rivas...

The Pirates need to remember Kerry Wood isnt the same Kerry Wood of 9 years ago...They can easily put a 3 spot on the board and go extra innings...

Well, if you PH for Bixler, it has to be Rivas, just in case they tie the game. I'd probably go with Michaels for the pitcher as well.

Rivas has to go in and play short. If you don't use him, you burn three guys instead of two.

You could let Bautista in at SS...He'd be no worse than Rivas this season...

Ah well. It's good that they fought back some. The four runs give them a little momentum for tomorrow. Kinda like those two third period goals for the Pens last night.
