Mets manager Jerry Manuel said the team would give Sheffield time to get in shape to play the outfield, which he hasn’t done regularly since getting hurt in 2006. Once he shows he’s ready, Sheffield will probably see action in right, Manuel said.

“What this does for us, it really creates some depth in the team,” Manuel said. “I believe that in the course of 162 regular-season games, depth is the one thing that is normally overlooked.”

Sheffield is one big swing from becoming the 25th player to reach 500 home runs. The Tigers will have to pay $13.6 million of his $14 million contract this year while the Mets get him for the major league minimum of $400,000.

For all the attention on the Yankees, the Mets might be pretty darn good.

Pretty good deal for the Mets. I don't think Shef is going to do much this year but him being only one away from 500 career homeruns will put people in the seats, and thats worth the $400,000.

Trust me, with a new stadium in the largest market in the United States, the Mets do not need an extra gimmick like Sheffield to put people in the seats. The Mets got Sheffield because they think Shef can help the team win.

He is a second rate player now. If he didn't have a big name he would be in the minor leagues or out of baseball with the last couple years he had and the steroid allegations. He might help but he wont help much.

The Mets sign a lot of washed up players they think can still play.

Just look at their pitching.
