Basically, that means one relief spot is all that remains to be determined. Those not yet told they have made it are Sean Burnett, Evan Meek, Craig Hansen, Donnie Veal and Jesse Chavez.

So who do you think is the odd man out that gets cut?

So we are looking at this:

Maholm
Snell
Duke
Ohlendorf
Karstens

Capps
Grabow
Yates
???
???
???
???

LaRoche
LaRoche
Sanchez
Wilson
Vazquez
Cruz

McLouth
Moss
Morgan
Hinske
Monroe

Doumit
Jaramillo

The ???'s being filled by four of the following five:

Hansen (Out of options)
Meek
Burnett (Out of options)
Veal (Rule 5)
Chavez

I'm guessing the lefties are the ones that should be worried. I'd take the chance Burnett clears waivers again. If he does he's the back-up to Veal should he falter. IMHO.

Also, I guess Monroe has an escape clause that's triggered today. Can't think there's any other takers out there.......

Does Chavez have options? If so, I think its him. If not, probably Meek.

Luis Cruz makes the roster? That makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

You beat me to the post punch! I'm picking Burnett.

Cruz might be on the team for now, there was talks the Pirates are trying to trade for a utility infielder so this might just be a temp move to keep on the team to finish the last few games of spring...

Maybe there's a possible trade being worked out with Veal like Meek last season too...Its interesting, though I think Burnett might clear waivers, but would he accept it?

At the risk of being accused of not thinking outside of the box, do the Pirates need three lefties in the bull pen? If Burnett wasn't so one dimensional I'd be inclined to think maybe Chavez, but all things considered, I'd rather the last spot go to a righty.

I can't say I disagree with you there. I wouldn't lose sleep over dropping Burnett, I just don't think that its likely they make that move. I think they want to keep as much talent (I use that word loosely) in the organization as possible, so it will be a guy who has options who is sent down.

Here's another thought...Florida is said to be interested in left handed relief, and NH is interested in Andino (though I can't fathom why). Maybe Burnett heads to Miami.

Nothing more exciting than talking about middle relief! I personally would be stunned if Burnett isn't on the roster. They keep mentioning the term "body of work" and with that said they know what they get with Burnett. Nothing great, but they know. Chavez or Meek probably go. I'm leaning towards Meek being sent down to continue working late innings. Might not be bad to let him keep improving at AAA as he seems like someone who could be in your bullpen for the long haul. His ceiling is much higher than the other guys(Chavez, Burnett).

Not sure why Meek's upside is so much more than Chavez'. Both throw 96-97 with control issues. Chavez has been known to go three digits on rare occasions.

*shrug*

Yeah, a guy who can't get out right handed batters.

Not disagreeing with you just saying I think they will go with a known commodity that has a bit more MLB experience.

There are three factors at play here: regarding the position players, the Bucs are trying to acquire Jeff Baker from the Rockies, and would subsequently send either Monroe or Cruz to Indy. I think that either a deal will go down by tomorrow, or the status quo will remain until May.

The Bucs are also trying to acquire Neimann from the Rays. I have heard no rumors other than they want players who are not yet eligible for the Rule 5. This would mean that guys like Brian Friday, Matt Hague and Dave Rubinstein would be in the mix. If Niemann joins the rotation, Karstens almost certainly will move to the bullpen, allowing Meek to recover from his ailments (it's been one thing after another for the poor bastard) and Chavez to go back to Indy where he may or may not be on the 40-man roster.

Finally, assuming neither of the above trades occur, then the Bucs will wait until the last second to give up on Meek, because the easiest guy on the roster to waive is Chavez and they will need a spot for Monroe. If they need to bring Chavez north, Lord help us and his flat, hittable fastball, we will have to remove someone from the 40-man that we'd rather keep. The only other option would be to put Dumatrait on the 60-man DL, which hurts us because he'll be ready in half that time, and he's better than Burnett or Veal. Hell, he's probably better than our 5th starter.

Well it may be all moot as Brown and Wehner are saying that Meek may be going on the DL because of a shoulder injury. If not the DL, then to AAA because he won't be ready as he's been nursing it for a week now.

I was at a county fair a few years back that had the guess your speed game...and after the 1st two pitches you'd guess your 3rd pitch and if you were a 1 mile per hour above or below you'd win a prize...Instead of seeing how hard I could throw, I decided to see how acurate I could throw.
I started floating Knuckle balls at the target, popping in at a school zone speed of 35 mph...anything under 35 wouldnt register so I got to throw about 5 balls because the 1st two were under 35...so the pitch came where I had to guess and said 36, after throwing 35 twice in a row and nailed it perfect and got a nice big stuffed animal for my girlfriend at the time...All the while the people standing around laughing seeing a big guy like myself throwing max speed of a power wheel going down hill...

I showed them up on the carnival hammer where you test your strength and got the bell to ring on all three swings...

I felt I had to share it with Bucfan's triple digit throwing power

It would be a travesty of justice if Burentt doesn't make the team.
