What is it?? What could the Pirates receive if they wanted to trade him?? Is there a scenario where his value is so low that they just decide not to trade him?

Nobody makes trades this time of year. But his trade value is zero. You would have to pay part of his salary to get someone to take him.

If he keeps hitting like this, he is unlikely to be traded. They will have to decline his option for next year and he will become a free agent.

It doesn't. That's for free agents. Since they hold an option, they can choose to pick up or decline the option. If they pick it up they can then trade him.

Thanks. That makes sense.

The Pirates flipped McLouth for Charlie, Gorkys and Jeff Locke.

At this point they'd be lucky to get similar return for their former MVP.

Always was a huge Cutch guy. Was very vocal that the pirates should not trade him. He's batting 211. One of the worst averages in our starting line up. I think Jaso is worse. So I don't know what has happened to him. Maybe he stopped juicing when Marte got caught. Who knows. He's almost an automatic out anymore.

I've thought it for awhile and mentioned it here previously. Right or wrong. Justified or unjustified. I think that Hurdle has lost this team.

And - to be perfectly honest - this team has lost my interest. Do I check scores? Yes. Do I care if they win or lose? Yes. But I no longer have the games playing in my phone every night or, at a minimum, have the MLB At-Bat App going.

Kang's proclivity to drink and drive.
Marte's stupidity.
McCutchen's fall from MVP to an also-ran.

I had expectations that the 2016 Pirates would be good and the 2017 Pirates would be really good. They weren't good last year and they are far from good right now.

Bitter pill. A very bitter pill.

We're basically already playing for next year. And its really early to be doing that. So how interested could you be in each individual game, when there are still a hundred and twenty or whatever almost meaningless games left to go?

It's the middle of May. If Cutch is dogging it out there because the season hasn't started out that well then I want him gone today.

My comment was from my perspective as a fan. I wasn't implying anything about McCutchen.

I'll always follow the team; I'm compelled to do that. But I don't watch as closely, don't root the same way, in a season like this. I don't think they're going to be able to turn this around. Not that I'm ruling out the possibility.

As a player, you have to give it your all no matter what. Especially in Cutch's position, trying to regain his stature, and not having a contract for next year. No reason he should be dogging anything.

I'm very concerned about his health. I think that is the elephant in the room. I'm talking about something neurological or neuro-muscular. His strength and speed are just failing at an alarming rate.

He doesn't seem to have atrophied noticeably and he's been on the decline for a couple years. Could be neurological. Could be Cutch was juicing and his body is just done. Might explain his seemingly new aggressive attitude. Could just be genetics and genuine frustrations.

My very amateur observation is that Cutch has gotten "thicker" in the lower body. It has slowed him down considerably. Particularly his acceleration. Personally, I can't help but wonder if he tried to add muscle to his lower body to become more of a power hitter.

From 2012-2015 (4 seasons) Andrew McCutchen slashed .313/.404/.523 for an OPS of .927
He won an MVP, finished in the top 5 of the MVP voting all 4 seasons, won a silver slugger award in all 4 seasons, won a gold glove, and was arguably the best player in the National League over that 4 year stretch.

From 2016-present (1+ seasons) Andrew McCutchen is slashing .248/.327/.424 for an OPS of .751

Oh how far one can fall in the blink of an eye.

I noticed the lower body thing, too. It's significant. He already had a good lower half of his swing, so I'm not sure why he would do that on purpose. That's why I'm leaning to genetics. It's ignorant to say this, but his mother battles her weight...
