The Tigers made some moves including returning Kyle Bloom to the Pirates...

Dontrelle Willis is on the DL with an Anxiety Disorder...

It was clear to me that those who were on the ledge and ready to jump due to the Pirates' roster decision regarding Kyle Bloom overreacted. Kyle Bloom was unlikely to make any major league roster.

So glad to be able to step down off the ledge. Now if only we could get Chris Shelton back, I'd be putting the down payment on my World Series tickets.

I certainly appreciate the humor, but the two situations are not comparable. In the Shelton/Bautista etc. fiasco, Littlefield left 3 spots open on the 40-man, then cut Mike Lincoln six weeks after the Rule 5 debacle. He basically had four additional roster spots to use, did not, and lost four minor league prospects as a result. Shelton was the Pirates' minor league player of the year, and one of those guys.

Regarding Bloom, Huntington used all 40 roster spots. The decision broke down as Kyle Bloom vs. Steve Lerud. Huntington did not expose the Pirates' minor league player of the year while leaving basically 4 roster spots open.

Bucfan,

In no way should my lame attempt at humor be interpreted as a Littlefield Apologia. May it never be! I was merely pointing out that most rule 5 losses, even the most egregious ones, are not all that worth getting worked up about.

yes, and I think history has shown that the adjective "debacle" is way too strong for that draft.

Chris Shelton, a footnote to April...

Just taking a moment to point out that Josh Hamilton, Dan Uggla, Willy Taveras, and Johan Santana are all relatively recent Rule 5 draftees who have had varying degrees of success in the majors. Going farther back, you can add Bobby Bonilla, Bip Roberts, Kelly Gruber, George Bell, and Jay Gibbons to the list, not to mention Roberto Clemente and Christy Mathewson. It's incredibly stupid for a team as talent-poor as the recent vintage Pirates to expose anyone with the slightest hint of talent or potential in the Rule 5 draft.

But I don't have a problem with the Pirates leaving Bloom exposed. It was extremely unlikely that any team would be able to hold a roster spot open for such a raw talent.
