Heard the new guy on TV. My initial reaction is that he is a natural for the job, just based on the sound of his voice.

After watching a while, I realized he sounds a lot like one of the Penguins announcers, but his name escapes me at the moment.

Maybe he will grow on me, but he sounded pretty generic to me.

To me his voice and delivery sounded eerily familiar with Skip Caray.

Sounded like he was trying too hard, if that makes sense. I think he will do just fine once his personality kicks in and he is more comfortable in front of the "Pirates Nation" (or Pirates city block).

I like his call of the action.

Just hope he doesn't pick up the bad habits of those other jackals that speak into the mic.

Mainly, not giving every freaking player a stupid nickname.

Does sound like a Caray announcer though, but he is quite easy to listen to and understand.
Wasn't he with the Rockies last year?.

I have to say that objectively, I prefer his voice and delivery to that of Lanny or Greg (especially Greg). However, subjectively, Lanny and Greg are the voices I associate with the Pirates, and as such felt as if it were a generic, national announcer. I'm sure that will change.

I think Paul Steigerwald is the guy I was thinking of. Doesn't he sound like him?

I agree with the Skip Caray analogy.

But, I like weird-voiced announcers. I hope to see him waving a babushka or green weenie soon.

Tim has such a classic baseball voice. He does remind me of a Marv Albert.

Am I one of the only people that actually likes Greg Brown?

I think part of the problem with the new guy is that he doesn't have any sort of attachment to the team. Right now this is just another broadcasting job to him. Hopefully as the season goes on, he begins to build relationships with the players and management.

He did do a good job in the interview with Hunnington but i just didn't like his play by play very much so far.

I was just looking at some of Lanny Frattare's career stats and there was one big thing that i didn't know he took a part in.
Lanny Frattare was lead announcer on the ESPN broadcast of the February 23, 1985 college basketball game between Indiana University and Purdue University during which Indiana coach Bob Knight threw a chair across the court, a moment which is frequently replayed on television to this day.

I just thought that was a neat little fun fact and a future trivia question.

Tim certainly does have a classic baseball voice. I think that as he becomes attached to the club, and we get used to hearing him as the voice of the Pirates, he will be hard not to like.

As for Greg...I might be able to appreciate his play by play calling if he would just knock off the annoying nicknames...

I agree with this and would add that he sounds generic right now becuase he doesn't really know the players that well. Give him some time.

I just can't stand Greg Brown calling a game at all.
