Ian Snell pitched well for Puerto Rico in the loss to Venezuela. He went 4 innings against a very tough line-up, featuring a lot of quality bats, gave up 5 hits, walked 2, and fanned 5.

I saw him throw two innings. He was hitting 92-93 mph, with good control. His slider was his K pitch. He threw 72 pitches in 4 innings, 49 of them strikes. If Snell could just avoid the 20-pitch innings, he would be a very good starter.

P.S. Snell's uniform tonight featured the name "Velez Snell." Not sure what that was about.

I heard somewhere that Snell is thinking of changing his name again, perhaps to his step-fathers? Does anyone know if this is true? I think that might explain the hyphen.

I had not heard, but thought that it might have something to do with his matronym. I don't know.

I tuned in long enough to hear the announcers claim he needed to pitch inside more. Any validity to that claim? Been a problem for Snell for a while.

I can't remember where I read it yesterday, but he is changing his name to honor his step-father or his mother's maiden name....can't remember which. His first choice was Ian "Tater Salad" Snell, but that was taken.

Correct, brad, as always. It is his step fathers name.

How many last names is this guy going to go through?

Maybe he is related to my mother in law. She has the same problem trying to make a decision on nearly anything. If he changes his mind at the last minute that seals it.

Did Ian and his wife break up or something, because Snell is her last name that he took on when they got married?

No, her last name was Oquendo. He took her last name, then changed his mind and switched it back to Oquendo. They are still married. He is now hyphenating his last name to honor his stepfather, whom he says raised him like his own son.

And we wonder why the Pirates management thinks the guy is a head case.

Who cares if he's a head case, as long as he's a good pitcher...

He probably has the court clerk's number on speed-dial.

He is the ultimate player-to-be-named-later.
