Gift Ngoepe is the player that the Pirates signed from South Africa. I saw him a bit on Saturday, and more tonight.

Thus for tonight against Mexico, Ngoepe is 2-2, with two triples that were smoked in the gap. The first triple was hit into right-center and the second into left-center. He scored South Africa's first run, and drove in their second. Both triples were hit on the nose. He hit both against former major league pitcher, and former Pirate, Elmer Dessens.

Additionally, he was dogging the runner at second when the batter dropped a beautiful bunt towards first base. The bunt made it past the pitcher and the first baseman had to field it. It looked like a hit, but Ngoepe - from no more than 10' away from the second base bag when the batter bunted the ball - easily beat the runner to first base and caught the throw from the first baseman for the put-out.

It was a pretty remarkable play. The kid is 18 years old, swings the bat pretty well, hits the ball with some authority, can certainly field the position, and has some jets. I am much more interested in this signing than I was two weeks ago ...

Exactly. He was just a few feet away from second base when the batter bunted the ball, and then beat the runner to first pretty decisively. He can move, no doubt about it.

In his third at bat, Ngoepe tried to bunt for a hit. The catcher made a good play and threw out Ngoepe by a half step.

In his fourth plate appearance, Ngoepe drew a walk on a 3-2 count. He drew the walk against Ricardo Rincon - former Bucco and the guy who closed out the 10-inning no-hitter against the Astros. The at bat against Rincon took 11 pitches.
