Ford has two quality games thus far. I know spring games don't mean a whole lot, but it is still nice to see.

The area I'm looking at most is control from the pitchers. Snell got off to a rocky start today but came back rather nicely and Ohlendorf did two no walk innings. Both had three Ks. Combine that with nice outtings from Hansen, Veal et al. yesterday and I'm happy so far.

The only two runs came off a Bixler error. Yuck, :x

Bixler's body of work is making me really believe that he has no future in MLB.

Pedro Alvarez ties the game at two in the ninth inning with a pinch-hit double..

Bucs score three in the ninth inning to beat Boston 3-2. With one out, Neil Walker and Jose Tabata walked...Pedro Alvarez doubled, scoring Walker...Andy Phillips was hit by a pitch to load the bases...Steve Lerud grounded out to first base, bringing home Tabata...Brian Bixler reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Alvarez to score the third run.

I like what I see through two games..

Curve -
You're pretty new to the Board and so you've missed some debates. I can't help but use your post to make light of a previous debate. This is all meant in good fun (poking at myself as much as anything) and not meant to be personal - not at all. Please take it in the appropriate light. After all, it is just Spring Training.

I must point out that Alvarez didn't tie the game with his double. He knocked in the first run. The tying run scored with one out when Lerud made a productive . . . er, um . . . had a productive . . . er, um . . . the tying run scored when Lerud grounded out.

And the winning run scored with two outs when Bixler made contact with the ball, put the ball in play and Boston's 8th string SS booted the ball.

Only 195 more wins to the ultimate perfect season!

EDIT: Didn't see the next post by Curve with the correction . . . doesn't change the fact that I wanted to have a little fun . . .

As always 9 you are respectful. But as my wife constantly reminds me, you just can't ever back off can you. I know, I know, not when you're right. I have forgotten much of the discussion to which you refer but I, for one, am not for a repeat of those issues agin this year. Before we know it we'll be wanting to talk about a recently departed catcher who never got injured and called a heck of a game.

No offense intended. That wasn't a lob at the end there with the expectation of you returning a slam.

Did you see the recent story about Charlie Manuel gushing about Paulino's intangibles? Just kidding . . . . Honestly, I was just trying to have a little Spring Training fun - including poking fun at myself for a topic that I know has been beaten to death . . . primarily by me.

That's all . . . l just want games to start. I'm in serious withdrawal.

No. 9, did you read Olney's article at ESPN yesterday? Speaking of intangibles.......

Quote:
Two days earlier, an AL executive spoke of how much it meant to his club to unload a talented player with a difficult personality.

"He sucked the air out of the room," the executive said.

Talent evaluators within the game will make judgments about fastballs, about defensive skills, about a hitter's swing. But increasingly, it seems, makeup is regarded as a pivotal factor on whether a player is acquired or dumped -- and this might be part of a broader evolution in Major League Baseball, a shift in focus away from the need of the individuals, to an emphasis on the greater good of the organization.

I was thinking of a few people on this board fondly as I read that. Full article here....

I want to do a nice montage of all of the baseball experts who use a players "intangibles" as part of the gauge of a players worth and send it over to CIA... Especially "Punter" or The Lumber Company, or The Pooper Scooper or whatever his name is today.

Such words were not typed. In all seriousness . . . has the beginning of Spring Training games given anyone else a huge baseball jones? I cannot wait for the real games to begin.

I'm rather enjoying the fantasy world I live in right now, where the Pirates win decisively.

I'm going to hate to see that go away come opening day...
