Baseball bloggeur Paul Sullivan has given himself the project of assembling two all-time rosters for every team in MLB: one featuring homegrown talent, the other featuring talent acquired from outside the organization.

Here's his take on the Pirates. Some interesting, if contentious choices.

Great list! I'm trying to think who should be added or deleted. Gene Alley?Jay Bell? Rennie Stennett? Rick Rhoden?

Derek Bell? Jeromy Burnitz? Chad Hermanson? JJ Davis? JR House? Nyjer Morgan?

Oh, wait...different lists.

Fun read. Like the author, I had always believed Bonilla was a White Sox product, as well.

Also, I don't know how I've been a baseball fan all this time and haven't run across the name of "Whammy Douglas".

Oh--and while I understand the need to include an extra pinch-hitter from the bench, I still would've gone with Craig Wilson in the role. For simply being a pinch-hitter, he was probably one of the best in the Bucs' history.

If I'm putting together these squads, I'm reserving 2 spaces on the All-Acquired roster for the 1980 LF platoon of Mike Easler and Lee Lacy.

Code:
Player           B     G   AB    R    H   2B   3B   HR  RBI   BB   SO   BA  OBP  SLG  OPS+
Mike Easler      L    91  277   55  103   23    3   16   57   33   37 .372 .433 .650   197
Lee Lacy         R    78  250   42   86   20    4    7   29   25   28 .344 .405 .540   160
TOTAL                     527   97  189   43    7   23   86   58   65 .359 .420 .598   181

Sweet Jesus!!

You should give a read-through of some of the other all-time franchise teams Sullivan's come up with. Good way to kill a dull Feb afternoon.

And don't forget we also lost Bip Roberts in that Rule 5 draft where we lost Bonilla. God, Bip as a lead off man on those playoff teams would have been something to see.
