I have to admit Im stunned, but good for him. I thought he was playing the Mariners organization and fans, but I was wrong. Itll be fun seeing him in an M's uniform again.

I'm guessing the DH was a big factor.

I saw it scroll on ESPN lastnight that Willie Mays helped him make his choice, something about keeping his image and legacy as a Mariner

One of my all-time favorites going home...I love it. He just helped Seattle sell a boat load of tickets!

Glad to see Griffey will hopefully finish his career where he started.

What's surprising is that so many people think this is a nostalgia thing.

The Mariners had zero production from DH last year. Even if Jr hits .250/15/60 that's pretty solid for someone with the miles on him.

I wonder if Ms fans are freaking out because theyre rebuilding and Griffey's return could very well take PT away from Clement and Balentien.

Don't think he'll be taking away too many ABs from them as a DH.

Well, for instance, if Johjima catches, wheres Clement going to play?

If they're truly rebuilding, Johji shouldn't be taking away ABs from Clement.

Johjima just signed a 3 year, 24 million dollar deal last season which takes him thru 2011. In theory, I agree with you, but i have to ask myself; are they gonna have an 8 mil per year guy sit on the bench for the next 3 years? Especially if Clement gets off to a cold start?

If the new M's GM knows what's good for him, yes. Johjima's extension was a mistake when it was offered, and it should be treated as such in the future. Johjima's contract is pretty much a sunk cost; it should be treated as such.

Keith Law's take. Same concern. Same solution...

Wladimir Balentien and Jeff Clement need to play in the majors every day in 2009, but Griffey's presence on the roster potentially removes at-bats from both young players. There is only one alignment that gets both kids into the lineup on a regular basis -- Griffey as DH, Balentien in left, Clement catching and Kenji Johjima either platooning with Griffey or released. Franklin Gutierrez and Endy Chavez would platoon in center.
