From Crasnik:

Will Ohman, one of the top relievers left on baseball's free agent market, has major league offers in hand from the Pirates, Marlins and Padres, but plans to continue discussions with three contending teams before making a decision on his destination for 2009, his agent said Monday. The Phillies, Mets and Dodgers have all stayed in touch with Ohman, but their interest has yet to progress beyond the talking stage.

Do we really need/want Ohman?

Are you repeating the oft used musical phrase--"the girls all get prettier at closing time."

Geez, all those posts and no answers to the question. :)

Need? He'd definitely be a upgrade over Burnett. So yes, I think we could use him.

Yes i think we could use him.He isn't that great of a player and there are other better relievers still out there so i wouldn't throw the bank at him, but the general consensus is that he doesn't want to be a Pirate.

His mood towards the Pirates would change for the right price. Ohman is good at what he does - get left-handed hitters out. In his career, lefties have hit a measly .197 off him.

But as between Ohman and Sean Burnett, I would rather have Burnett. Burnett is finally healthy, was throwing 93 mph last year with a nasty curve, and lefties hit a meager .171 off him. His WHIP against lefties was a superb 0.88. So, Burnett is a very good candidate as lefty specialist, a guy who is under the Pirates' control for 4 more seasons, and a guy who has much more upside as a 26-year old who may grow into much more than a lefty specialist.

Meanwhile, Ohman's ceiling is to continue to get lefties out for one more season. If not, his value is zero.

I don't want Ohman, and I frankly don't understand why the Pirates would be going after him. We have plenty of lefties in the system, many of whom could serve in the LOOGY role that Ohman typically occupies. I see no need to spend any bit of extra money to acquire a role player of which we have plenty. Buying Ohman would be a waste of resources.

I'm not looking at Ohman as a LOOGY. I'm looking at him as someone who is not one dimensional, like Burnett. Burnett got roasted against right handed hitters last year, Ohman was very respectable. Also, Ohman was lights out against lefties as well.

I like the balance Ohman brings. I have no idea how much he wants, so I do agree that he probably isn't real cost effective, and would be a good example of a player who falls under the economic concept of diminishing returns. BUT, if the price was right, I'd take him.

Dejan seems to think that the Pirates might be trading Grabow and that is the reason for the interest in Ohman. (We could have "Show me your OOhhhhman face night at PNC")

Apparently the Pirates offer is in the $1 million range.

Its not a bad contract offer but do we really have a place for him.I don't want to see him hurt the time that some of our younger relievers get.

I have to take the position advocated by Willton and Bucfan that Ohman is probably best suited as a loogy, and we don't really need one when we have quite a few left handed options for the pen (aside from Burnett and Grabow, we also have Veal and Dumatrait). Further, I would argue that rebuilding teams would be wise to not throw money at a bullpen when in the position the Pirates are in.

However, if Grabow is traded, I think getting Ohman for $1 mil would be a reasonable move. Not sure I would spend much more than that though.
