Highly touted third baseman Pedro Alvarez has a second chance to make a first impression with the Pirates.

The last time Alvarez, the No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft, arrived at Pirates camp in Bradenton, Fla., it was after a lengthy and contentious contract dispute -- and the delay had taken its toll on his fitness. Friday, he arrived at camp slimmer and trimmer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Alvarez, listed at 6-foot-3 and 234 pounds, didn't say how much weight he gained or lost. But he acknowledged that tendinitis in both knees, diagnosed after his lengthy holdout, didn't help matters last season, according to the report.

"The entire offseason, I was shut down," he said, according to the report. "It's widely known that when you shut down the running game, you do gain a few pounds. That's why I'm doing everything I can."

The creaky knees thing is a bit worrisome, but if he performs as expected in the minors, and makes the jump successfully, people around here won't even remember his agent is Scott Boras, let alone the contract fiasco.

Do you think that tendenitis qualifies as "creaky knees" of concern. Its tendenitis, not cartiligde damage.

Probably a function of doing too much, too fast, after sitting around waiting for Boras too long.

It has nothing to do with the knees...don't you guys remember...its because he doesn't want to be a Pirate and is lazy and has a bad attitude....

I wonder if our historian would point out those who told us this kid won't amount to anything as a Pirate, just so we have a record going forward.

I don't know about you guys, but 6'3" 234lbs. and says he is in baseball shape but not "shape shape" plus has the hitting skills people drool over sounds pretty exciting to me.

As a physical specimen, he puts me in mind of Pujols. Legs like pillars...

No problem. Colin wont let us down :)

I think Alvarez went from undisciplined slacker who doesnt want to be a Pirate to young committed prospect in record time. Lets hope he keeps it up. Me, Id bet on it. (But if I lost the bet Id keep the 50 bucks and ban him anyway... Some gag lines just endure.)

Actually I was thinking like frobel...Built a bit like Pujols. Wouldn't it be nice if he turned into that type of player.

BBF, I'd take another Ken Griffey Jr. too.
