I really hope that the Rays flounder over the next week so they would be willing to give up Ben Zobrist. With Walker's back and Mercer's forearm, I worry about our middle infield depth. Nix and Martinez (and eventually Barmes) are not the answer. Zobrist would be a solid, steady player at 2nd or SS, and could provide some outfield depth as well. He has a $7.5M team option for next year with a $500K buyout if we don't want him beyond our stretch run.

I don't think, particularly if you just went after Zobrist, that you would have to give up a top tier prospect. You could spice up the offer a bit and go after one of the Rays solid relievers (Boxberger or McGee) to bolster our bullpen.

I think that the return Tampa Bay got for Price tells me that Zobrist isn't going anywhere. They're not rebuilding, they're reloading. They might deal Zobrist at the deadline next year, but I think that they want him around until they see how next year goes.

Exactly the proposed trade I was concocting Friday afternoon.
