This is where Huntington's failure to shore up the bullpen is killing this team. You can't win a bunch of close games with only three reliable arms in the 'pen.

And you have jayson nix playing 2nd base. If I'm in a pennant race, I don't want jayson nix as my only option.

I'm pretty sure that Neil Walker is your primary option there. No team has great back-up options at every position. I'm not going to kill Huntington for not having a better bench right now.

It's the bullpen that worries me.

The Pirates have a great backup option at second. The problem is, he's playing third or left field. Walker going down didn't make them use Nix. He's out there because two guys are hurt and another imploded.

Tracking at work, did the umpire just call a non-swing strike on a pitchout with Alvarez up?

What's with this HP Ump??? He's calling balls strikes...pitches that are way outside of the strike zone. Another idiot!

As if Mr. Scherzer needs any help... :?

Sure looked like it on Gameday, didn't it?

Yeah that's why I didn't know if Pedro swung and Gameday misclassified it or if the umpire just blew it. Guess he blew it, but man that was significantly worse than his others had been (and there have been a lot).

This has been a pattern with the umpiring with Alvarez in the box this year. As if the guy isn't struggling enough, now he has to worry about 6 more inches of "plate" outside.

Josh Harrison hasn't been a "backup" since about May 2. So he's not a bench guy now.

But he's still a backup at second. The point is, if Alvarez doesn't implode, Harrison is at second. Problem solved.

Too many things went wrong at the same time. There isn't a team in all of baseball who would be coping with this any better than the Pirates are.

Fingers crossed that Mercer's injury isn't serious.
