NH had some success last August pulling off some waiver trades, and for the Bucs to make the playoffs, he's going to have to do it again. Our roster is pretty messed up right now. We have Pedro taking up a spot being basically a pinch hitter. We are getting no production from first base. We have a starting left fielder who can't seem to stay healthy. And our two best hitters are battling nagging injuries.

I wonder if any of the following position players could get through waivers and be of help?

Ryan Howard
Chase Utley
Nick Swisher
Chris Carter
Adrian Beltre

It's just a name I'm throwing out there. He's definitely available. Is he toast? Who knows? If a player struggles in Philly, it can be a pretty tough place to play. We would definitely need lots of salary help.

If we're looking for 1B with batting averages below the current 1B that's a good list.

There is only ONE general manager stupid enough to guarantee a declining, unproductive Ryan Howard $75 million over the next 3 seasons.

Thank God that GM is not Neil Huntington.

I'm ok with the current 1B situation. If Ike didn't get on base it'd be more worrying. I like where you were going with Beltre and Utley but their contracts are huge.

Howard already plays in one of the best hitters parks in baseball. He's worthless in every way.

Adrian Beltre would not pass through waivers. The rest of those guys are worse than Pedro.

If that's your list, then no, we don't have to do anything. I'd take Ryan Howard if Philly pays all but $10 mil of his deal and throws in Ken Giles.

You love you some Ken Giles, don't you?

I always have favorite middle relievers. He's replacing Ziegs.

I'd say the sense of urgency just spiked a bit...

Well, maybe it's time for other guys on this team to quit riding cutches coattails? Maybe time for guys like Martin, walker, polanco, marte to step up there game. And for Pedro to start playing like he' was that number draft pick a few years back? Our ace pitchers to pitch better. And for guys like Ike, gaby and Travis to just be at least average.

In case you haven't noticed, Polanco is a rookie and Martin is probably the best player on the team now.

Chris Carter is a poor man's Pedro.

Think about that.

Among Pirates, Martin ranks second in WAR, Marte fourth and Walker sixth. Martin and Walker are third and fourth in OPS.

Those guys aren't the problem.

Not going to bother to look up the others, but Ryan Howard is worse than Ike Davis (and it isn't close, either), but is owed $60 million minimum over the next three years, not counting the rest of this year.

I think that the pirates shouldn't reach in desperation. That said an oblique strain is tough to come back from. It happened to the face of the pirates. Walker is hurt, Pedro has become worthless (if he's not playing everyday) and Marte is hurt. The rash of injured reared its ugly head at the worst time. It was a good season. The division was in reach. There was hopes of somewhere around 90 wins (31-21 finish) but that can't be done with Cutch on the shelf for two weeks, probably more. I hope I'm wrong.

Last thing to do is panic and claim huge contacts. The coming years are going to be strong.

And why the heck would the Phillies do that? They'd be better off just releasing Howard and keeping Giles for a lousy $10M savings.

The only thing worse than that would be the Pirates accepting the deal.

Would like to get Marte up ASAP. Snider can hold down RF in the meantime, I think. He's doing OK. Unless of course they going to put off moving Pedro to 1B and work Harrison in the OF until Cutch returns.
