If he allows them to shift without yelling at the infielders, sure. Can't have too many arms.

I wouldn't give up much, and by much I mean sayyyy just Heredia.

Other issue with AJ is the $13 million that will be due to him next year. Not sure the Pirates would buy into that.

Is that a player option? I thought it was an option of some sort.

It is a player option. I think it gets to $13 million if he starts 32 games. He is at 21 right now. There was a mutual option for $15 million, too.

I don't really see where he improves the rotation and he's not even close to performing his contract. Unless the Phillies will eat half the deal and take a guy like Adam Frazier back I can't see it happening.

I'd do it. Getting him back would allow Worley to go to the pen or be part of a trade. Worley has made me a bit nervous the last two times he took the mound. It would give the Pirates 5 legitimate MLB starters and still allow for some depth options as well. He would bring an intensity that would be great during a playoff push as well. The money shouldn't matter at this point with where payroll is at, unless they are planning to make other trades that add payroll. AJ has been a decent pitcher on a bad team, in a bad ballpark. He would be a good addition IMO.

He's gone 7+ innings 10 times, and less than 6 innings only 4 times. He would help ease the work load on our bullpen for sure. His walks are up, but considering the team and the ballpark, his other numbers aren't that bad. He doesn't come here and become our ace, but he definitely is an upgrade from Worley, Cumpton, etc.

I say that we don't need another Volquez, we already have one.

I wouldn't give up a worn out dirty jockstrap to get him back.

But those guys aren't even going to be in the rotation once Cole is back. He would replace either Volquez or Locke and he hasn't really been better than either all year. K's down, walks up, giving up a high percentage of hard hits. It just seems like it wouldn't add any real improvement.

But at least he's expensive, which should please the Cheap Nutting crowd, and any pitch could mean season ending hernia surgery, which would at least make it possible to avoid keeping him around next year to watch his further decline while paying him a fortune.

I think you pair AJ back up with Russell Martin and you would see a nice bump in his performance.

I think you would the usual late season fade from him, as he tires from trying to strike everybody out.

His track record has been poor August but good September.

Plus the PNC factor.

---

All things considered, it's as close to a 'going for it' move that the Bucs can do.

It seems like a better 2015 than 2014 fit, but it wouldn't be a bad fit unless NH parted with too much on his end.

I'd agree, if you had a time machine. Martin can't fix AJ's hernia.

Ya know, A.J. could definitely be much better for the Pirates than the Phillies due to one extreme advantage held by the Buccos:

Burnett put up 8 scoreless against the Giants last night.

With Martin as his battery mate A.J. would be a quarter of a run better.

A.J.'s ERA and FIP adjusted for Martin's framing abilities would be 3.62 ERA/ 3.71 FIP

I think this is a deal that gets done. Players are pushing for it, and AJ seems very interested in returning. Maybe he agrees to drop the option in his contract...

I doubt that. I'd say it's more likely that the Phillies agree to pay some portion of his salary next year in exchange for a better prospect.
