Volquez had some ugly stats the past several years, and despite having a very unlucky HR/FB rate the first 3 weeks of the season, he has turned it around big-time.

From May 22 to present, he has posted 61.1 IP, 52 H, 24 BB, 45 K's, 3 HR's allowed, 7 wins, 2.79 ERA, 3.54 FIP, and a very reasonable (i.e., not lucky) BABIP of .293. Those stats include the ugly start against the Reds - basically the only bad start covering more than 6 weeks.

Kudos to Volquez and the Pirates front office.

Andrew McCutchen may be the Pirates Most Valuable Player since he came up but Ray Searage has been the Most Valuable Person to this organization the last few years.

Ya man keep it up!

I didn't watch last night's game but caught the 9th inning when he was throwing 95.

Just curious, was that his velocity throughout the game?

He's had a helluva run. I thought last night's start was going to turn out a LOT worse when he put the lead-off man on base in each of the first four innings. But Volquez worked out of it.

Somebody else, I think it was Tim @ Pirate Prospects said that a good deal of the praise is also due to Jim Benedict, who I believe is their minor league pitching coordinator. He's been responsible for finding the gems in the rough and making adjustments to the young guys and the guys on rehab.

Indeed, Benedict gets a surplus of praise from inside the organization. His title now is Special Assistant to Huntington, and he interviewed for Philadelphia's pitching coach job over the off-season. He worked closely with Liriano and Burnett during extended spring training due to their injuries. Morton in particular has also really praised Benedict's intellectual approach for his own turnaround. Here is a great, detailed article about his working w/ Morton: http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2011/05/03/The-rebuilding-of-the-Pirates-Charlie-Morton/stories/201105030232
