We'll call it "Laz Diaz" and permit it to continue calling the game, blindness notwithstanding.

You have redundant systems so that if one fails you use the other.

Taking close pitches that are in fact BALLS and expecting the umpire to do his job is reasonable.

But how many times have you've seen pitches that were way outside of the strike zone (which should be called balls) called strikes? For me too many times. I'm NOT expecting the Umpire to do his job. That's why I'd rather go down swinging on a "close" pitch than have that Umpire ring me up just standing there. And again, we're talking about if a batter has two strikes. Protect the plate. Foul off pitches...put the ball in play (even if it's weakly put into play) or go down swinging.

Just to get off this subject a bit (although it's related), I heard on last night's Pirate broadcast that the Pirates have the highest hitting average with batters who have two strikes! Interesting. I wonder if it's because opposing pitchers don't fear the Pirate hitters and get ahead in the count many times or if the Pirate hitters are not disciplined enough not to chase pitches outside of the strike zone...or bad calls by the Umpires :D or maybe a combination of all of the above. Anyways...the Bucs are pretty good at hitting the ball when they do have two strikes. Maybe that's why when I do see a Pirate get rung up by the HP Umpire standing there on a called strike three I get bent out of shape!

Vlad Guerrero takes great exception to this.

Oh, for God's sake, 1 batter in a thousand hits balls off his shoes, so it's now a good idea?

And here's a shocking bit of news - Guerrero would have been even a BETTER hitter if he swung at strikes and not shit eye-level or off his shoetops.

Manny Sanguillen takes great exception to that, too.

As well as sausage-smashers everywhere!

I agree with what you're saying Bucfan...but at the same time...I've never seen a pitch 4" or 5" outside of the strike zone be called a strike

I have. Also inside, and even low.

Then the ump takes over, and you're no worse off than you are now.
