Ouch. Yanks haven't had much luck. Three players out from their rotation.

$155 million plus what posting fee was involved in the deal (probably in the area of another $25 million) ... if he is gone with TJ surgery, than that works out to more than $30 million per year.

Yeah, what could go wrong with that kind of $$ for a free agent pitcher?

Partially torn UCL for Tanaka. Not having surgery yet, though I'd think it's inevitable at this point.

Agreed.

Even a moderately compromised UCL is a guarantee for a full tear with further use. Meanwhile, the pain caused by the damaged UCL basically ruins the pitcher's ability to throw normally. Having a pitcher with that type of injury continue to deal risks an injury to the shoulder or legs as the pitcher changes his delivery to try and lessen the pain.

Sounds similar to Harvey. Pray it gets better but it probably won't.

It sounds weird, but this is more evidence that drafting pitching is a smart play. Yes the injury risk is bigger but it's not as crippling as when you tie up a ton of payroll in a free agent pitcher then can't get a suitable replacement when he's on the shelf. At least an ace on a league minimum salary isn't preventing you from spending more.

I hate the Yanks as much as anyone but I hate seeing this. Tanaka was pitching really well, too. Man...so many UCL injuries this year, WTF?

Yeah, this.

Tanaka looked to be the next Japanese phenom and that would have been good for the game.

He still may be, but he's probably going to lose 12-18 months of his career. That sucks.

You know, I'm thinking the Cubs may have the right idea. Stockpile position player prospects, let them mature into good hitters, and then, when they're near or at the majors, trade for pitching.

I also think the Pirates should be far more aggressive in signing position players to long-term deals than they are with pitchers. Get your 6 years with good pitchers and then let 'em go. But right now, and I mean RIGHT NOW, I would try to sign Russell Martin to a 3-year, $36M extension. And I'd keep trying to sign Polanco to a long-term deal.

I'm with you on that. Give Martin a blank contract and let him fill in the terms.

My dad and I were just talking about Martin last night and how they need to sign up RIGHT NOW to a deal.

Every time I think of the Pirates without Russell Martin, I cringe. The team really does need him, for so many reasons. Further, as we have seen, the drop-off from Martin to Sanchez defensively is NOT acceptable.
