Here's a little game I like to call -- Who says no? I propose a hypothetical trade and you tell me which team, if either one, says "no" to the deal. First proposal:

Pittsburgh Pirates trade Pedro Alvarez (controlled through 2016) and Luis Heredia (in A ball) to the San Diego Padres for Tyson Ross (controlled through 2017) and Chase Headley (free agent following 2014 season).

Who says no?

Who says no?

The Padres.

Heredia is struggling massively and Ross is a legit, affordable starting pitcher under control for three more seasons.

Pedro is better than Headley due to the FA issue and recent production, but he is getting expensive and the Pads get a compensation pick and a very solid starting pitcher for minimal cost just by standing pat.

If Heredia were competent, then the deal is better. Maybe Pedro and Creasy? Somebody better than Heredia.

What a freaking bust he is turning out to be.

Padres. Headley and Alvarez almost a wash (Alvarez is a bit better), so it basically comes down to Tyson Ross for Heredia. No way the Padres do that one.

Okay, here's one. Vance Worley and Mel Rojas, Jr. to LAA for C.J. Cron. Who says no?

Padres say no.

Angels say no. Cron has been outstanding and is only 24. Would probably take quite a bit to pry him away.

I think Selig needs to require the Angels to dump Cron for minimal value, since they exceed the maximum "C.J." allotment with Cron on the roster.

1. I think Alvarez is prime to be traded. He is young enough that someone will see some upside in him and there still may be. That said, I think he will stay for the duration of the season and the offseason would be the logical time to see him moved.
2. Heredia, IMHO, has little or no value right now……who would want him?
3. Ross for Alvarez might work at some juncture….
4 Headly is free after 2014 and is not a long term fix.
5. The 3rd base fix if Alvarez is dealt is right in front of us….Josh Harrison.

I guess I say no….. 8-) 8-) 8-)

You can swap out Luis Heredia for another pitching prospect, but I like the parameters of the potential deal. For 2015, the Pirates would have a rotation featuring Cole, Ross, and Morton, and I wouldn't mind seeing the team move Walker to third base and Harrison to second base.

I like Pedro, but I don't think he'll ever be anything more than he is -- a streaky power hitter who struggles to make contact and who will make an inordinant amount of throwing errors.

Pedro's power would play very well in Petco, where you actually need to hit 450-foot type shots just to scrape the wall.

They also seem to have arms galore, perhaps also due to the Petco effect.

I wouldn't be so sure they'd say no, as Headley has lost a ton of his value.

I think I read that Headley has to take pain shots to deal with a current injury. Says he needs frequent days off as well....no thanks on him.

I'd be ok with trading Pedro only if you have a competent replacement at third base. No, Josh Harrison is not that guy. He's hit for all of two months. I'm not ready to proclaim him starting third baseman of the future.

I think two much more likely targets on that team would be Kennedy and Street. Not sure how much would be required to acquire either or both of these guys. I think another guy they will take a long look at is our old buddy AJ Burnett. Otherwise I think they will try to upgrade the bullpen, which could be done by moving Volquez there and/or calling up Mazzarro.

Headley sucks, I can't see the Pirates wanting him, and Heredia is getting beat up, so I don't think that the Padres would be all that interested.

Correction: Alvarez is massively better.

Exactly. You don't sweat enough rehabbing grounders in Bradenton, you get deported.

And that's why I agree that he should be cut and deported and possibly jailed! He's lucky that the Bucs don't cut his ass and allow him to be massively overpaid.

He's an American citizen. You can't deport American citizens.

I'm hoping you were joking there.

Who says no...
The Bucs offer Josh Bell, Glasnow, Mercer and a lesser Pitching prospect to the Cubs for Starlin Castro.
