I took a look at the Pirates depth chart on Yahoo and came away depressed. This team is not going to score many runs. I know I know...captain obvious. It just seems this season is the least optimistic I've ever been as a Pirates fan.

I mean...are you serious??

1. Nyjer Morgan LF
2. Jack Wilson SS
3. Nate McLouth CF
4. Ryan Doumit C
5. Adam LaRoche 1B
6. Brandon Moss RF
7. Andy LaRoche 3B
8. Freddie Sanchez 2B
9. PITCHER

The worst part of that lineup is our best hitter will only play...at most...5 days per week. Sweet. Can anyone cheer me up?

How about worse?

Monroe LF
Bixler SS
Nate CF
Doumit C
Pearce 1B
Moss RF
LaRoche 3B
Vazquez 2B

Rabbi walks into a bar with a duck on his head. The bartender says, "where'd you get that"?. The duck says, "Brooklyn. The place is full of them".

Personally, I think its possible that the lineup will be more fun than it might appear.

A more appropriate joke for this board...

A pirate walks into a bar. The bar keep notices there is a steering wheel in the pirate's trousers and says, "There's a steering wheel in your pants." The pirate says, "Arrrrrgh! It's driving me nuts!"

I have to agree with Kingston. I think that this line up could be a pleasant surprise. Let's assume Hinske gets a little more playing time early in the season because LaRoche #1 isn't hitting so well. McLouth should be more conditioned for full-time duty. Freddy, Moss, and little LaRoche should be healthy. The potential is there.

I always like to be appropriate.

Switch Andy LaRoche and Jack in the lineup. That should do it to some degree.

Rene Descartes walks into a bar and orders a beer.

the bartender asks if he would like a shot with that.

Descartes replied "I think not" and promptly disappeared.

I'm not particularly enthused with the prospect of having a leadoff guy (age 29 in his first full season) who only draws a walk in 6.6% of his plate appearances, and who seems altogether too capable of putting up a sub-.650 OPS. That said, I'm a little surprised by how all-over-the-map the various projection systems prognosticate Morgan in 2009:

Code:
Season   Team   G   AB   PA   H   1B   2B   3B   HR   R   RBI   BB   IBB   SO   HBP   SF   SH   GDP   SB   CS   AVG
2009   Bill James   71   240       70   56   11   2   1   37   16   15       36   2               26   8   .292
2009   CHONE   120   442       122   93   22   5   2   67   33   28       81   5               32   13   .276
2009   Marcel       269   299   76   53   16   3   4   39   24   23   1   52   3   2   2   3   11   5   .283
2009   Oliver       475   527   130   104   18   5   3           31       86   11   2   8   4        .273

Code:
Season   Team   BB%   K%   BB/K   OBP   SLG   OPS   ISO   BABIP   wRC   wRAA   wOBA

2009   Bill James   5.9 %   15.0 %   0.42   .339   .367   .706   .075   .340   26.4   -4.6   .324
2009   CHONE   6.0 %   18.3 %   0.35   .326   .362   .688   .086   .334   50.4   -6.8   .310
2009   Marcel   7.9 %   19.3 %   0.44   .343   .409   .752   .126   .338   35.7   -0.3   .331
2009   Oliver   6.1 %   18.1 %   0.36   .329   .353   .682   .080   .329   52.5   -11.0   .308

If he comes within a sniff of that .752 OPS that Marcel spat out for him, Nyjer gets my vote for breakout Bucco of the year.

While I would never claim that a Juan Pierre comp is anything to get terribly excited about, Morgan's speed does indeed compensate for some of his iffy peripherals. (cf. article at fangraphs: http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/is-nyjer-morgan-the-next-juan-pierre) He shouldn't take a single at bat away from McCutchen once he's called up, but until then I'll be intrigued to see how Morgan performs, which is more than I thought I would say about him going into spring training.

His most recent succes was a .320 (or thereabouts) second half last season after shaking off some injuries that caused the abyssmal first half.

I can't believe the total lack of love for our second baseman on this board. Talk about "What have you done for me lately?" Geesh...

You know you're in deep trouble when you're relying on Freddy Sanchez and Eric Hinske to carry your lineup.

Who's asking either of them to carry the lineup?

Im with you, Doug. Many of us know and appreciate what a healthy Freddy Sanchez can hit. Real good BA, plenty of doubles, and an excellent BA w/RISP. I sure wouldnt bat him 8th.

I have to admit, I am not depressed at all.

I am looking forward to watching our young players and possible future on the major and minor league levels.

Hopefully, players like Adam LaRoche, Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez have good seasons to make them tradeable at the deadline or keep the team respectable. But what they really do is irrelevant.

What Ryan Doumit, Nate McLouth, Andy LaRoche, Brandon Moss, Nyjer Morgan, Steve Pearce, Ian Snell, Paul Maholm, Tom Gorzelanny, Matt Capps and Zach Duke do is relevant. The more they grow, the better chance we have of getting out of this mess.

Yes, we will keep an eye on Andrew and Pedro as well as Walker, Lincoln, Morris, Tabata and the rest of the prospects, too. They are just as important.

So, I am actually looking forward to the 2009 season.
