Whew...bleak. Well, as I said in another thread, our best chance at a wild card would be if they could somehow wrangle a decent starter before the deadline. It doesn't have to be Smardzjida or Shields, but somebody...maybe like Cliff Lee when he returns. The Philly firesale ought to be in full swing by then.

I was wondering about that a while ago. The hernia kind of scares me. Might not be a bad idea, though. How about someone off this shopping list:

Houston- Collin McHugh, Scott Feldman
Cubs- Jason Hammel
Indians- Justin Masterson
Mets- Jon Niese
D'backs- Ian Kennedy, Josh Collmentor
Twins- Phil Hughes

None of these clubs figure to contend. A package of prospects?

I'll add a few:

Tampa Bay -- David Price
Arizona -- Brandon McCarthy
Chicago Cubs -- Jeff Samardzija

Yeah, the first and last ones I figured would be too costly, and the middle one hasn't been real good for a while. But yeah, good names.

McCarthy's actually been WAAAAY better than his numbers appear in 2014. Get this, he has the fifth BEST xFIP (2.80) in the National League. How 'bout that?

Houston would seem like an ideal candidate with how they've been stocking up on arms for years now.

If someone like Feldman could be had, it would help this rotation stay afloat. His contract is problematic though. $18 M over the next two years for a <2 WAR SP? Necessary evil, maybe, but... yeesh!

Ian Kennedy is on the Padres. He is pitching against us tonight. He would be the guy.

Maybe you're right. It might be a good time to buy low.

Yeah, messed that up. He would be a great acquisition, no matter who he is pitching for right now. Not sure I got Hughes's team right, either.

JC has me convinced on McCarthy. I think he would be both serviceable and affordable.

And yet, even with him or someone coming in to bolster the rotation, would it be enough?

Cole
McCarthy
Morton
Cumpton
Liriano

Still looks a bit iffy...

I wonder if Volquez might make a good late inning guy as filthy as his stuff has been lately. As long as he could throw enough strikes.

Aside from landing Price or Shields the Pirates rotation will look iffy the rest of this season.

Cole-McCarthy-Morton-Liriano-Volquez/Cumpton/Locke would be better than what the Pirates are currently trotting out there. I'd take my chances. Regardless of who is added, Morton and Liriano need to work on their command and control. Those guys can be borderline unhittable, so just being able to throw strikes with the fastball should lead to pitching deeper in games and racking up more wins.

Ray Searage has some work to do.

Yeah, if Morton and Liriano don't start improving with command, they might as well not get anyone. Smardzjida acquisition would vault us into contention, I would think, even with modest improvements elsewhere.

1-2-3 hitters (GP-Marte-Cutch) are now 9-for-11 tonight.

I blame the hitting for not scoring more runs.

The septic tank strikes again. Another wasted effort by Locke.

Or the starting rotation.

Less than half of the bullpen is performing above a replacement level. That's pathetic.
