Quote:
It took nearly three months, but the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement to bring back catcher Jason Varitek on a one-year, $5 million contract, pending a physical and the execution of final details, two major league sources said Friday.

The contract would include a 2010 club option for $5 million. If the Red Sox decline their option, Varitek would hold a player option for $3 million.

There also is $2 million in potential incentives in the player option in 2010, which would be triggered if Varitek plays 80 to 120 games. If he were to play 120 games that season, he could earn $5 million even in the player option.

Under either scenario, the maximum total value of the contract could not exceed $10 million.

There are three sports talk radio stations here. The Celtics are 39-9, have won 10 in a row, and may be playing their best basketball of the season at the moment. The Bruins are 36-8, in first place, and may be playing their best hockey of the season right now. And yet for three weeks, talk radio has been dominated by discussions of Jason Varitek.

Hosts and callers have whined that he's selfish, greedy, misguided, not very bright, and ill-served by Scott Boras for waiting until the last possible minute to sign. They've fretted that all that Red $ox pitching talent will be squandered if someone other than Varitek has to do the catching. They've moaned that even if he does sign (which, now, he has), he can't hit anymore, so the Red $ox will be giving up an out each time he comes to bat. They've worried that the Red $ox will have to give up too much in trade for a new catcher (Saltalamacchia? Miguel Monteiro?) who won't know the pitchers and thus will cost them games.

It's fascinating to listen to. You'd think this guy held the future of the free world in his hands.

Yet ironically, all those points have merit. And that makes for an intriguing situation, especially when its prompted by the rare Boras misread. Jon Garland, I believe, also played his hand badly but hasnt received a fraction of the attention.
