I was looking at where this team is headed in 2010 (since we all know where they are at for 2009).

Here are the contract situations.

Ian Snell ($4.25m), Ryan Doumit ($3.55m), Paul Maholm ($4.50m?), Ramon Vazquez ($2.0m)

Jack Wilson ($8.4m, 0.6 buy) and Freddy Sanchez ($8.0m, 0.6 buy) have club options.

Arbitration eligible:
3rd year - Tyler Yates
2nd year - Nate McLouth, Zach Duke, Matt Capps
1st year - Tom Gorzelanny, Sean Burnett

2+ years running - Craig Hansen, Jeff Karstens, Andy LaRoche, Phil Dumatrait

Everyone else the Pirates will have control through 2014 or longer.

That is a hell of a lot of money committed to a no-hit middle infield. I presume that if at least one is not traded, at least one will not have their options picked up.

I gotta think neither of them will be back at that price and honestly with the way salaries are going, neither one will get a very good contract when they hit free agency.

Agreed. Unless Sanchez wins another batting title neither one will be back. The whole trade thing with Wilson made it obvious they want him out, and now I think he also wants out. This is one of the first places the Bucs are going to have to look when they start spending some cash to secure future success. Whether through FA or trade they have to do something with these two positions. Aside from Shelby Ford, who I personally think is highly questionable, there is nothing in the system.

Wow, that is the worst $16 mil middle infield I could possibly imagine. I'd take any two random journeyman and one legitimate ballplayer rather than have those two guys at that price.

If Freddy reaches either 600 plate appearances or at bats that his option is automatically picked up for 2010

I'm fairly confident that Freddy won't satisfy either of those conditions.

So I wonder if Freddy is sitting at 590 plate appearances Sept. 1st, if Operation Shelby Ford will start? thus putting Freddy in the trunk?

I seriously doubt either will be patrolling the Pirate infield in 2010. I actually think they are both outstanding players, which puts me in the minority around here, but not at that price. THey will let Jack walk if they can't trade him, and if Freddy is playing well enough to trigger either option, he will be traded by July 31st, which could well be the case.

I really think the key acquisition to make this club a contender in 2011 (other than pitching) is a stud shortstop. Someone like Troy Tulowitzki, J.J. Hardy, Jhonny Peralta, etc.

i agree with doug in that freddy is gone no matter what if he is healthy. If he even hits anywhere near .300, there might be some interest from other teams, even though the buccos may have to eat some of that salary.

I think Jack is a very good shortstop overall, his defense is great and his hitting is average...

Theres still an option for 2010 with him and if they cant find a replacement at SS, I dont have a problem keeping him...but I believe a Sanchez trade is likely if he is healthy and is hitting well

The other option would be to decline the option and then re-sign them at a market value. Or, if either would qualify as a type B free agent, at least offer arbitration.

Or like a Grant Green. I would seriously be happy if we came out of the draft next year having taken either Green or Ackley. I might even be, dare I say it, optimistic about our future.

Hey Dan-- thanks for posting that site. Very interesting to me, especially looking at the youngest guys salaries. Sent it to a good friend who also appreciates the info.

Of course it is outdated already because of Maholm's signing, and the addition of Heinske.

Sorry to see Doug go, but makes sense because of the power numbers and versatility of Heinske..

I cant take full responsibility for it, I believe Bob in Boston posted the site earlier this winter, I just saved the link for access in the future...

Well then, a big thanks to my main man Bob.

This isn't the first time you have proven to be a tremendous researcher. But what else from a newspaper guy in a small town like you.

Say what you want about Freddy, and theres no denying hes an incomplete ballplayer, but his David vs Goliath act a few years ago when he won the Batting Title is one of the few genuine thrills a Bucco has given me since '93. And I will always cherish that lump in my throat when he was introduced at the All Star Game and the crowd went nuts. I suppose its not unlike how Yankee fans from a generation ago felt about Larsen. Certainly not one of the greats, but the provider of a truly great moment in baseball time.
