Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com has learned from a baseball industry source that the Pirates are targeting free agent outfielder Eric Hinske.

The Pirates could use Hinske as their fourth outfielder and primary pinch-hitting option. According to Langosch's report, "discussions between the two sides have increased to the point where the Pirates may be bringing Hinske to Pittsburgh before the end of the week."

He can play the same positions that Doug Meint can, has some power...I dont have much of a problem for a one year deal, depending on the price

This would be a much better signing than Luis Gonzales. Essentially, Gonzales can play left field, Hinske can play left, right, first, and third. He adds more versatility, is younger, and has more upside at this point in his career. Bucsdugout has a nice little write up about their opinion on him and I agree with it 100%.

She goes on to say:

If that is the case, it would seem to suggest that Hinske would be in town for a physical, meaning an agreement had already been reached.

Yes, he has trouble seeing balls thrown by left handers.

Hinske= Exactly the guy I expected the Pirates to go after all offseason.

Unless Manny is one of the other free agents DK made reference to, I'm expecting Hinske will be a Pirate.

Hinske sounds like a decent player, but I'm wondering who exactly is going to be able to hit the baseball when we face a lefty?

We'll hire some guys to give all opposing left handed pitchers a Reverse VanBenschoten

5:18 p.m.: Hinske and the Pirates have agreed to terms on the one-year contract, as of late this afternoon. Financial details are not available, but the base salary is around $1.5 million.

That settles that (pending the physical, of course). A small move, but I think a reasonable one.

A relative nice price for what will be the Pirates' main guy off the bench...

My savior!

This is a signing that would be a great compliment to a team that didn't lose two of the best players from its previous years starting lineup and not attempt to replace them.

I like the signing, but it's not going to help.

I certainly don't think signing Eric is going to hurt! He does have some power, is fairly young (31) and has some versatility if one of the young guys (Moss, Morgan) doesn't cut it. I think it's a good signing. He may also be trade bait at the trading deadline if a contending team needs a DH or pinch hitter with some pop!

Defensively,he is a better outfielder than infielder. I bet he gets a couple starts in both right and left a week. He can fill in for LaRoche after he has struck out 9 times in a row in April. He will get lots of at bats IMHO.
