Great article. Really, really solid analysis.

My son learned the 2-seam from a very good coach who also worked as an area scout, including for the Pirates 2008-2011. Son learned the pitch in the winter of 2008, before the 2009 season.

The detailed information about the grip, spacing of the fingers, the pressure on the index finger vs. middle finger, release point (over the top to get late, north/south movement rather than from down lower, which gives sliding side-to-side movement that is easier to detect by the batter), thumb position (directly on the bottom of the ball to avoid unintentional slider-like movement) ... son worked on this pitch for weeks.

I learned so much about 2-seam vs. 4-seam as my son was learning.
